I have a 2G iphone with FW 1.4 and the 3.9 fake bootloader that I activated and unlocked using iplus 2b. I now want to upgrade to the latest fw using winpwn 2.5. As my phone is already unlocked and jailbroken what do I need to do to get it to 2.1, activated and unlocked so I can use the apps store in itunes.

BTW guys I am using itunes ver 8.0 on a windows XP PC.

Point taken, thanks. However my search and the thread you linked to does not answer the questions I have. All the guides I have come across are for Mac users. My concerns are this:

1. Do I have to upgrade my phone using iTunes to the newest legit apple firmware, making my phone unusable before I run WinPwn.
or
2. Can I just run WinPwn on my phone as it is without updating the fw from 1.1.4 doing the whole unlock/activate again.

I'm sorry but I really do not see how ending up at 2.1 with activation/unlock and no Jailbreak helps my situation.

As far as I see in the first post, your question is "what do I need to do to get it to 2.1, activated and unlocked so I can use the apps store in itunes". It looks like exactly you're looking for.

On windows u cannot upgrade to 2.1 as winpwn 2.0 is not out yet

if your phone is pwned download a mac created custom pwned ipsw (firmware) and restore using that

if ur phone has never been pwned then upgrade to 2.0.2 using winpwn and then download a custom ipsw creaded on mac and upgrade again

download the custom ipsw frm a torrent

also remember do not use ur 1.x.x back up on a 2.x.x as it will break the 2.x.x

Cheers, I just used WinPwn and followed the guide, no need to upgrade the fw first. Anyway following a successful WinPwn I did exactly what you said not to do I restored a 1.x.x.x backup from itunes but all is well with my phone, go figure. I was a bit concerned about setting it up as a new phone.

One curious thing, everyone says pawn your iphone but it seems to me that WinPwn pawned iTunes, not the phone. The only time the phone seemed to be accessed was to restore the custom firmware created by winpwn during the process. Now I'm no expert on this stuff but just observing the process this is what appeared to be happing in my case.

duck9000 I think I am probably being thrown by the different termanology, sorry. To be honest I am not sure what the difference is between a 2.0.1 activated/unlocked iphone and an activated/unlocked/jailbroke iphone on 2.0.1. Jailbreak just seemed an integral part of hacking the original iphone with iplus ect so I guess I presumed it was the same with this.

Jailbroken phone means the phone has cydia or installer to install unofficial (non appstore) apps

a normal activation/unlock means u can use any sim card but cant install cydia and installer apps
