Default Upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.0 and 3.1.2

Hi All

I have been a little behind in the upgrading dept.

I have a pwagned iphone 3g running 2.2.1 and baseband 2.28.00 and it is unlocked.

I tried using the pwange 3.1.3 and 3.1.4 but cant seem to do it.

Can someone steer me in the right direction

Thanks

You did not state whether you are on mac or windows, seeing as you talked about pwnagetool I will assume mac. These steps will also get a lot shorter once blacksn0w is released later today.

Your baseband is too old for the new OS 3.1.x

Firstly you need to restore to the official apple 3.0, this will upgrade your baseband to 3.0 level.

You do this by following this guide to jailbreak with redsn0w
http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4303

Then install ultrasn0w to unlock via this guide http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

Once you have verified your phone works unlocked on 3.0, you can use pwnagetool 3.1.4 to create a custom ipsw and restore using this to get to 3.1.2. via this guide http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4254

You will need to install ultrasn0w again afterwards.

Thanks Olethros

Good deduction ... yes mac

It seems to me that I probably should wait for Blacksra1n ... no?

Then I would update through itunes to the new firmware and then unlock it, right?

If you are in no rush, then yeah, I would wait for blacksn0w to come out, see that the reports are generally positive and so on before trying it. Your description is pretty much right, update through iTunes to new firmware, run blackra1n to jailbreak and then run blacksn0w via the app that blackra1n installs during jailbreak.

The negative side of blacksn0w is that if it doesn't work for you, there are no other unlocks for the 05.11.07 baseband and there is no way to downgrade to 04.26.08 (unless you are one of the very lucky few who have very old 3G iPhones and can use fuzzyband)

Geohot has been testing this well, I am not trying to criticise his work, which is amazing. Just trying not to over hype an unreleased product. Both yellowsn0w and ultrasn0w required a few releases before they worked stably for everyone.

What is fuzzyband?

I bought my 3G right when it first came out after the 1st generation 2Gs. So is that the 'very old 3G'?

So how is this an advantage? May as well learn about it?

You could be lucky, check out the following guides.

Can't hurt to try fuzzyband, it will tell you if you have version 5.8 baseband bootloader.

If you are lucky enough to have this bootloader, you are pretty much upgrade proof as you can always downgrade if a new baseband update breaks your unlock.
