[3G] PwnageTool 3.1.3 for Mac OS X is out

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool for Mac OS X that adds support for the 3.1 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G.

SUMMARY:

The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.

The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.

DETAILS:

1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
2. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
3. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
4. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.
5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
6. PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
7. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
8. For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
9. There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

What’s a Baseband?

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.

Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features).

The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

WHICH DEVICE DO I HAVE?

Read the description to identify your device, once you have correctly identified your device follow the specific instructions for that device as listed below.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S)

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, if your device was Pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 then you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod Touch 2G

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes, this will only work if you are already Pwned at 3.0 or 3.1.

iPod Touch 3G

At this time PwnageTool does not support this device.

Well, I thought I solved error 1600 by changing to an original iPhone cable, but, actually I screwed up..

I restored to the STOCK FW3.1 by mistake.. add me to the list of idiots..

oh well, I wanted an ATT account anyway.. sheesh

Mmmm.. Just out of interest, those of us not worried about unlocking (as I'm on an official tariff with O2 in the UK with an iPhone 3G), can we upgrade to 3.1 official and then re-flash with a Pwnage'd 3.1 afterwards to obtain a Jailbreak?

On another note, has the Carrier name not displaying issue been resolved from PwnageTool 3.1?

Thanks! - I've noticed an issue with my car adapter on my iPhone (which also has an FM transmitter in it to allow me to play iTunes through my stereo) where the phone constantly loses GPS signal with it plugged in (not helpful when you're running Navicom or TomTom); which wasn't an issue under 2.2.1 - and hopefully not under 3.1!

On a 3G phone, yes what you suggest will work and will get you the upgraded baseband.

The carrier name thing is purely cosmetic, it has no impact on the phone's operation.

Things to consider about 3.1/updated baseband:

As of now, o2 is still refusing to unlock iPhones that have completed their contract (or prepaid). If you ever want to sell your iPhone it would be an advantage to offer the ability to unlock it to work with any carrier. My guess is that o2 will start offering an unlock service for iPhones but will make it expensive (to stop any mass exodus of iPhone customers). However, until they announce something officially. Do you really want to take a chance by upgrading to a baseband that can't be soft-unlocked for free?
Also if you rely on being able to enable internet tethering via a hacked profile. You need to stay away from 3.1 because Apple has blocked the tethering hacks and o2 make you pay an extra monthly fee to legitimately enable tethering.

ok, i've started with the really first unlock on the 2g, than upgraded to 3g (still with 221 cause lack of time) and now bought an already jb and unlocked 3gs with 301 installed.

today i've got time to make it suitability for daily use.
now after experienced that there's no possibility to restore to an older version than 3.1 last week, i'm really confused and unsure what to do!?

for what i read, there's no really need for me to go to 3.1, so i think cause of the still working tethering option, i stay at 301.

but what's the deal when i need to restore in the future?
for me it looks like that when i wanna restore to 301, i had to backup my ecid number, which isn't no longer possible with sauriks server, right?
and i've just seen that it isn't possible with umbrella too, right?
is there another tool to get the shsh file for my current 301?

let me know when i'm wrong, but for me it looks like that there's currently no chance to restore with 301 when you don't have transfered your ecid number on sauriks server, RIGHT?

if this is true, what's the best thing to do in my situation?
when i now don't upgrade to 3.1 and transfer the ecid number to sauriks server, i'll get the same trouble when apple announce 3.2 f.e., RIGHT?

so, to came in a position to restore with a non current os in the future, i must upgrade to 3.1 right now, RIGHT?
