I completely understand where you are coming from, and i know exactly what you are talking about... I just realised how pointless this argument was and its my fault because I didn't think the whole thing through...

I've managed to create the IPSW with ultrasn0w in it and jailbreak succesfully.
If I go into Cydia I see ultrasn0w, highlighted in pink, what does that mean?
Also, when I reboot the iPhone, it crashes on start-up and I cannot get it to turn on but have to restore from scratch.
I presume Cydia is doing something on start up (activating ultrasn0w?) and something's going wrong so it crashes.
Anyone have any ideas please?

I have used this technique on 2 occasions. Using ultrasn0w bundle 0.6, I got a successful unlock some weeks ago.

Today I tried the same technique outlined in this guide using the ultrasn0w 0.9 linked here. The phone restores fine but on reboot it gets stuck at the apple logo. Eventually the spinning wheel appears and thats it. I tried twice with 2 separate ultrasn0w bundles. I decided to try the 0.6 bundle originally used in this guide and I got unlock immediately. It would be nice to get a more updated version of the ultrasn0w bundle.

Before you reboot please open Cydia and update/install mobile substrate that is what is causing you iphones to crash, if you want i can make another bundle with mobile substrate in it, but it is a pretty easy thing to do.....

PS: it is the most updated version its just that mobile substrate is required for the latest version....

would you be able to kindly make a bundle that includes mobile substrate too?
I don't know how to create those kind of bundles, and the iPhone has a broken wi-fi so I can't download/update it from inside the phone.

Download the following file:
Hotfile.com: Ultrasn0w 0.91-1 Bundle
Extract the file and put it in ~/Library/Application Support/PwnageTool/CustomPackages
Then run PwnageTool and it should show up under Custom Packages when creating your custom 3.0 IPSW

This includes the latest version MobileSubstrate.

I have read through this thread but I still seem to be missing something!
I have a 3g that I upgraded today. I used Redsn0w 8.0 to jailbreak (following the 3.0 IPSW trick) then after it rebooted I went to Cydia on my iphone to run Ultrasn0w and discovered I couldn't as I don't have a wifi service near me!

When I download the Ultrasn0w bundle (thanks Home Grown) I searched my drive and I do not have the folders suggested where to place the bundle (ie PwnageTools/CustomTools.

I created this folder, named exactly as advised, dropped in the bundle and ran Redsn0W a second time (also selecting Icy in addition to Cydia) but there was no option for Custom Settings or an option to select Ultrasn0w during the set up process.

I rebooted again, checked on Cydia and still can't find Ultrasn0w - nor can I go to the "Manage" folder on Cydia is this just kicks me straight back to the home page (I assume that's because I have no wifi connection. I searched the iphone for Ultrasn0w and that search brings back nothing as well!

I'm stuck at this point and cannot seem to get past it! The phone is jailbroken but not yet unlocked as I can't seem to get Ultrasn0w onto the phone!

Please can someone help me, I'm getting rather panicky as I've been at this for hours now and I'm starting to worry that I have lost my iphone for good!

I found a workaround to this - I was able to connect my macbook to a hardwire internet line and then used internet sharing to enable the iphone to hook up to the internet through airport on the mac and then I downloaded Ultrasn0w via Cydia!

It works and I'm very happy!
