Hello people smarter than me.
I wonder if anyone has some idea about what I have just come across with my friend's 3G?
Basically, I Pwned my 3G iPhone (a 16G in white) about 2 months ago, it was totally successful using Pwnage 2.2.5 and custom firmware 2.2.1.

I have just tried to do the same for a friend who got his O2 iPhone one week ago. This time when I Pwned and restored the custom firmware I get no phone signal at all with the O2 SIM or any other SIM installed.
So, I reran Pwnage and deselected the "Activate the Phone" from General Settings. This time I connected to iTunes and it reactivated the phone which worked with the O2 SIM but now has the "Wrong SIM" message when I put in another.

I have now gone through this process 3 times always with the same result.

I would be most appreciative of any advice.

check the baseband/modem firmware version. If it is 2.30.xx then it will not work without an offiicial SIM.
Since he got the O2 iphone a week ago, it is most likely the baseband version is 2.30.xx hence unlock failed with yellowsn0w & a non-official SIM

Is there now any way to roll back to an earlier firmware version, or indeed is this what I need to do?

If your Bootloader is version 5.08, you can downgrade the baseband to the 2.28. Otherwise, your are stuck.
