Exclamation UK turning WWW into Big Brother as of tomorrow.

Internet records to be stored for a year - Telegraph

Starting tomorrow all Emails and Websites visited by UK citizens will be recorded by ISPs and stored for a year.

They will be able to use this data for anything from suspected terrorism to parking fines.

I live in london and want to know one thing.

How do I stop them from doing this?

P.S I'm not a terrorist.

with a minimum of unix/linux knowledge and a good trustworthy friend with a good internet line can be done. Setting up the proxy server on the remote computer and you use that proxy through a ssh tunnel. In that way the traffic between you and the proxy which is logged by your ISP will be encrypted.

Default proxy servers

A software solution would or should include onion routers ie TOR Tor: anonymity online. (No ... I do not work for the Torproject and do not necessesarily endorse this specific product. I have used it and similar products in the past)

Thanks!

So.... setting up Tor for browsing those special sites. And email? I use gmail and not the ISPs mail system. Is there a way to encrypt that?
Or do I need to bother with gmail as is web based?

Cool re:UK turning WWW into Big Brother as of tomorrow.

eMail through my ISP was a problem and was constantly getting a denial of access to my account through a Tor network thus most of the time I disabled Tor. I have not had time to go back and tweek it since my last backup and clean install. They do offer "bridges" to bypass those problems, but you need a trusted individual to link to. My ISP does offers me "shell" email accounts so I do not have to give out my actual email address, but that does not resolve your problem as your ISP is the problem.

An additional layer of security could be added with use of encryption software ( PGP, TrueCrypt, GnuGP etc). But again, only trusted friends would have your description key and you would have theirs.

A Few Questions:

How are they going to monitor e-mail? we know it goes via different ports. However, how would the monitor it if for example you has a GoogleMail account that forwarded e-mail onto a e-mail application such as Mozilla Thunderbird.

Filing the information they are after, if we say there are 3 major ISP's Virgin, BT, Sky. How are they going to gain access to all this information?

IP addresses can change if your modem is left off say for a week, you are likely not to get the same IP address again. Issue here is what happens if an IP that has been doing something illegal somehow ends up being your IP?

Crackers can clone IP / Mac Addresses - Same issue as above how do you prove its not you?

How is this going to be governed? , will they need to get a warrant to search the records? or can they just log on and do a search say MP3 and everyone that comes back is investigated?

Best idea, get a VPN. SwissVPN is very nice, costs 5$ a month or 50$ a year. Fast, like your real Internet Connection and faaaaaar away from UK and outside the EU. Compared to TOR it's much better to use such a paid service as they give you no noticeable drawback on your existing connection.

If you are on a mac like I suspect, childish easy to setup, possibility to set it up dial on demand etc.. PPTP is not bulletproof secure but secure enough to keep them off from recording anything you do and keep them off very well. But I think they are already testing l2tp as well which is really hard to crack up even if anyone who is mitm really wants to.

There is also a Service for VPN in sweden called relakks, run by the pirate party of sweden which is 100% anyonymous. But sadly they are regualry overloaded which makes it a bit sad to use on a regulare base. Speeds are far from perfect but well, 100% secure and anonymous internet access if you need it.

Alternative ways are SSH tunneled connections to a cheap VPS or server outside the EU but it's hard to find anything affordable here, if you really just need it for secure tunneling out of your country. If you want countries which really don't care try kz, my or cn but hard to get servers there with any useful bandwidth or ping time. Use a anoymous prepaid VISA or similar to pay them and you are pretty safe (prepaid anonymous xbox live visa cards from some countries, or lt issued anonymous prepaids work nice usally).

Hope this helps It's best to my knowledge you can do to anonymously or unsurvilanced access the internet.

Well isn't beeing suvilanced by NSA and other mafia like organisations like Music Industry not as bad as staying in the UK

Ok enough joking, but I think for a UK citizen its best to have the VPN gateway somewhere close cause of the latency. You have to pump all your traffic accross that line.

Default You cannot stop this

Wake up people. This eavesdropping cannot be stopped, and maybe it should not. Let me say up front - I am a UNIX engineer.

The Internet runs on IP addresses. All addresses and Internet traffic is trackable - yes even ALL spam - the question is if someone wants to be the one who does so. VPN, and Encryption etc., is ALL registered and can be opened by law enforcement. It is not legal to make an encryption method and have it not available to law enforcement. Almost everything has a backdoor - or known way in. the Internet is largely a public communication medium. It is NOT private.

Pull your heads out of your rears - you do not own a right to privacy on the Internet. Get over it.

The most secure method of communicating with someone - is in a soundproof room face to face; gee let's see - the two tin can and string method works too. NOTHING - and I mean NOTHING else is secure as to communication transmission means. Not mail, not faxes, not ESPECIALLY phone calls land or cell. Certainly NOT radio transmissions of any kind.

Let's see - you are going to use someone else's form of a tool for communication and you want it to private just for you? Come on are you that stupid? Get over it - "big brother" has been here for a long-long-long time already.
