Hi,
I just bought my 3Gs. After successful jailbreak and unlock(thanks DevTeam) i have downloaded Skype from the app store. It's all good, but it seems my research before the purchase was not good enough, so i was in for dissapoitment. Here in the UK, the 3 network has this free skype offer for some time. Its great offer because you can talk as much as you like, using the 3G internet connection still has its monthly limit, even on unlimited plans. It is all good, but the availability on limited number of phones lead me to the conclusion that is not skype what those phones are running. Instead is a small application called iSkoot for Skype. The trick is - only the user status and the chat goes via the phone internet connection. The skype call is routed via local access number. Incoming calls are also received via this number. The bad news is that there are Java versions for most phones, .Net version for WM phones, there is version even for Blackberry and Android, but not the iPhone. I found some interesting technical info about it here. So i did some search, but i couldn't find similar application for the iPhone, i hope i am wrong and i missed it, any info will be appreciated. If not maybe somebody is working on such an application ? I am sorry if this subject was mentioned before, i just couldn't find it. Regards |

Well, you could install VOIPover3G from Cydia and Skype from the app store.
With the VOIP package it tricks Skype into thinking it is on a wifi network and allows you to make calls over the 3G network. This method is probably against the rules of your agreement.. but it will allow skype to work normally on the 3G network. |

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I did that and use Skype over 3G. The quality is much better compare to the local number when i used it with my old SE phone and iScoot Java appl. But it seems very tricky to get good enough reception so the call can go without interruption. Also have to wait for a month to see how unlimited my unlimited internet plan is ![]() Regards |
