Okay, I've read plenty about Pwnage tool vs Redsn0w (and historically QuickPwn and Winpwn). Including this from iClarified:
iClarified - iPhone - How to Select an iPhone Unlock/Jailbreak Tutorial My question is - what is the real (technical) difference between the two? iClarified's simplistic explanation that Pwnage tool "offers more customization options" isn't good enough for me as a techie. ![]() Specifically I'm looking to figure out which meathod to use. I realize they both jailbreak the phone in preparation for Ultrasn0w. But is there a benefit to using Pwnage tool in that it perhaps 'preserves' the baseband? Is it the safer way to go and/or provide more security from Apple's updates which some bloggers say "could brick your iPhone if you have jailbroken/unlocked it"? Can anyone help me out with a scenario in which using Pwnage tool is the better way to go? Also, can an iPhone upgraded to 3.0, the Redsn0w'd and/or Ultrasn0w'd be restored to factory defaults, and then Pwnage tool'd? Perhaps I'll go the Redsn0w route for now, but would like the opportunity to Pwnage tool it in the future. Is this possible? Thanks! |

You can start here iSeminar - The Beginner's Guide to iPhone Hacking [UPDATED] and then, use Google for more detailed info. Good luck

Thanks Duck9000, I've read both this as well as the advanced version of this document, but this tutorial as well as all of the others I've seen is quite basic.
I'm looking for a more technical/advanced tutorial or discussion about the difference between Redsn0w and PwnageTool. I understand that PwnageTool requires the generation of a custom ipsw and a restore process etc, that's just the basics - my question is what ramifications does this have for future software updates? Am I better suited in the long run (with future Apple updates etc) with a custom installed ipsw through PwnageTool? Redsn0w + Ultrasn0w seems quite easy, but what (if any) are the downsides to using this process instead of PwnageTool + Ultrasn0w? Was just looking to have this discussion and get people's input on this. Thanks to all. |
