I bought an iphone 3g (came with fw 2.1, unlocked), and the seller said that it was from US and that he had unlocked it with quickpwn. I updated it to fw 2.2 (via itunes shift+restore) and it was still unlocked, and when i used quickpwn, the option to unlock didn't appear. After the jailbreak, i didn't use yellowsn0w and it is still unlocked.

Oh, and i looked in the settings - general - about, and there it showed that the model is MB496T, which is said to be from Italy here.

The model + the staying unlocked when i updated is telling me that my iphone is factory unlocked. Is this right? If it is, i'll update to fw 2.2.1 =)

EDIT: is there any way I can be 100% sure that it is factory unlocked BEFORE i upgrade to 2.2.1?

MB496T seems to suggest it is unlocked but an easy way to tell before updating to 2.2.1 is to DFU restore with 2.2 firmware first.

After it completes itunes should activate the phone & you should get a network signal straight away.

As you said, I DFU restored it, and before it activated, the "slide for emergency" showed up. Then, it activated automatically and the signal appeared quickly after that.

I have an issue with an iphone from Italy, 489TA (iphone 3g Parts Numbers) from the list (link) above, so the iphone suppose to be factory unlocked, I know that the previous owner mess up with quickpwn and everything, i just upgraded to 2.2.1 from itunes, but when i put my sim card (also different ones), the phone is complaining that there is no sim card installed.

What can I do ? Please help me, the iphone is totally useless right now.

DFU restore to Apple stock firmware 2.2.1 with you private simcard in the iPhone. After that iTunes should activate it. If not, the hardware is screwed or the iPhone is not a factory unlocked one.
