I dont know, this is kind of speculative.
But GPS isn't dependant on the Sim card or locking mechanism. I'm currently in Japan without service (forgot to enable roaming) so i have it in flight mode. GPS works fine in WIFI areas. If Egyptian law has GPS blocked, then the GPS satelites would just refuse to return data to anything within the given co-ords (i.e. Egypt) I think the GPS would still be working, but just not getting returned data from the sats due to the ban. Again speculative at best. |

well i think it's a kind of good news that GPS is only "disabled" which means that in the near future, only a software or a firmware update could activate it...here we need the help of professional hackers...we're still waiting for the official release of the iphone in egypt...
still don't know if it will be locked to vodafone..or unlocked... by the way i was offered an internationally unlocked iphone..is that u were talking about..cause i refused to buy it.. and how an internationally unlocked iphone the GPS would be deactivated ???? it's kinda weard.. |

No No, it seem you do not understand.
I have 2 iPhone3G one internationally unlocked from Italy and other from USA. On the first one the GPS not working but on the same time the other one that uses UNIV-SIM the GPS working great.. so this mean that GPS not blocked by satellite. What I think is, when you active the iPhone3G via iTunes for the first time and see that you have Egyptian SIM it makes GPS not working. I have friends on Egypt have the same case. Even if I try to active using QuickPWN the phone shows no service. and I can not use it as phone. So all I need from experts to tell me is there a setting or anything on the location core firmware can block the GPS. is there any workaround? |

if this is the case it's a software thing...not a hardware and that's good...
did u try to replace the maps.app?

We have the same firmware that everyone have. Apple do not make special firmware. this starts since firmware 2.1, firmware 2.0.2 was ok, and sure the maps.app is not what have the restriction because GPS is not working on other apps like (TrackThing) sure it is the LocationCore Firmware.

I think you are right about iTunes disabling the GPS function, based on the region settings for your carrier. That can probably be enabled in some .plist. If you have a sim from another country, re actvating with the foreign sim then use your UNIV-SIM. the only thing is you'd have to change your apn settings if you want to use data. If you don't have a sim, pm me and I can send you an AT&T sim. You pay posage of course.

Thank you for your kind, I already have AT&T that comes with the iPhone3G from USA.
But We need fix for all Egyptions , we need to use iPhone3G and we do not want to use UNIV-SIM or anykind of sim, that why we pay for for the unlocked phone. I wish if anyone can help find this PLIST or a way that I can fool my iPhone and tell it that I am not using Egyption carrier. (602) |
