Let me put it this way... unless Apple has made a hardware difference between an pre-paid 3g and a locked 3g, then their updates, say 2.1 will be the same for each phone, thus getting your hands on the "unlocked" ipsw and installing that one will unlock the 'lock' 3g, as the software 'itune or ipsw' only sees the hardware, which again, unless is different should only look to see how the phone was activated...

All of the work so far has been donated for FREE and I am really appreciative of this but at the same time, can see the lure, especially considering all of the BS, of those selling your software at a profit!

Oh and let me say, nothing is wrong with making a little profit... we all have bills to pay! And here is this competition too...

The lock is rooted in the hardware, it has nothing to do with the firmware (IPSW).
Besides, if it were this simple the dev team would have unlocked it months ago. Getting a hold of a factory unlocked iPhone 3G isn't really difficult.

It can`t be really locked in the hardware as there wouldn`t be an soft unlock option.

hi i am totally noob but if the theory it´s true why not try to hack itunes by sending an unlock files that are sent by an unlock iphone?
May be it´s impossible but doing this i think we could say that lock status is in phone or in apples servs

We'd better leave all this to the Dev Team. Don't think a noob like you and me will suddenly solve the unlock.
I think it's something link serial number + what's on apple's servers + a bunch of other stuff that keeps it locked.

So, I have att, with the contract. Reg. 8 gig phone no pwn or jailbreak. I am interested in the mods but need to help to understand them. From what I gather, I dont need to jailbreak because i have a contract, and am fine with that. just wanted to be able to " sit in the front seat of that cop car, and touch the shotgun" basically do what i want and get what i want. Help? Explanations? Pointers?

short answer: no jailbreak - no modding, just app store apps

You're probably confusing jailbreak with unlock.

Since you're in a contract with AT&T you don't need to UNLOCK, but you need to JAILBREAK in order to get access to 3rd party mods.

Unlock = Be able to use you iPhone on any network
Jailbreak = Get access to juicy third party mods i.e., ride in the front seat of the cop car

Hi JohnFa,
It must be something in software / firmware(IPSW). Otherwise how can you explain of previous iPhone unlocking?

I have also heard recently from a french friend who bought an iPhone from UK, that he called his operator in France and got his UK iPhone unlocked

(I wonder if I send him another one, he would be able to get that done for me? - Anyways not relevant here)

I am a complete noob, but as far as my understanding goes, the problem is that software in encrypted using a secured key. When you connect to iTunes, it sends a special command which is encrypted and unique for each iPhone [generated at apple server] to say if you are unlocked. When you upgrade a software etc, this is not touched unless explicitly included in the software.

Ofcourse it is just my understanding and could be wrong.

. Though I have been working on xda's for quite some time including their unlocks.

These threads are becoming more and more technical.
Please, simply; Is it possible yet to UNLOCK the 3G for any sim card, any network?
I had a gen 1 iPhone which with PWN I upped to 2.0 and it works perfectly.
I Just bought a 3G OOB, but have no idea now if it can be unlocked!
Help please!
