Hi, I am wondering if this would be possible. I come from Canada where we have two carriers. Unfortunately mine is locked to the one I'm NOT with. Would it be possible to somehow copy the OS of a Fido iPhone over my Rogers iPhone so it won't even need to be unlocked? That way I could just use as if it came from Fido.

It wouldn't be possible as it's not in the firmware it's locked. I'm guessing it's a serial number of sorts which lies in the hardware. It checks with the database and sees that the phone is locked to a specific carrier. So, no, copying the OS wouldn't help.

I've just bought a Fido phone myself on ebay. It's being shipped to Sweden and will arrive next week.

Im with TA on this, the iTunes check defo susses out the iPhone connected. The route to unlock is in the device somewhere, but with such a lot of code for all three checks I fear Apple has done genius work so far... lots of genius code breakers out there though. Time will tell.
The urgency is not so great as most are entering into contracts anyway... big brother is the winner so far Aaargh!

But we're quite a bunch out there who won't accept the companies high prices and rediculous plans. I, myself, can't afford to sign a 2 year plan as I might now be in the country next summer. But I wan't to use my iPhone now

Not all of us are on contracts. I bought mine for $670 from Softbank Japan. Since I paid the full price up front, I am not on a contract. It's month to month. I really want to go back to Docomo as well as use it in the US when I go back.

Is it just me or can't you take an unlock 3g ipsw and install it onto a "locked" 3g?

Let me put it this way... unless Apple has made a hardware difference between an pre-paid 3g and a locked 3g, then their updates, say 2.1 will be the same for each phone, thus getting your hands on the "unlocked" ipsw and installing that one will unlock the 'lock' 3g, as the software 'itune or ipsw' only sees the hardware, which again, unless is different should only look to see how the phone was activated...

Am I helping or hurting this seemingly lost cause? Or is this a case of everyone is waiting for a software solution, while others are making a fat profit selling phones on ebay at nearly a grand each? Sorry, don't mean anything mean by that!

All of the work so far has been donated for FREE and I am really appreciative of this but at the same time, can see the lure, especially considering all of the BS, of those selling your software at a profit!

Oh and let me say, nothing is wrong with making a little profit... we all have bills to pay! And here is this competition too...
