Well, here in Brazil we have a law that says that all phones should be UNLOCKED if the users wants to. Yesterday, i was at the store buying my 3g and i asked about how the unlock process works. The girl told me that it's made trough itunes. The only thing she does is "request" the unlock. Then, the next time you connect your iphone to itunes, it will show you the option to unlock your phone.

I dont if that information helps you or the Dev Team at all. The thing is that here in brazil we can get our hands on unlocked iphone relatively easy since unlocking is free of charge.

Well, of course i can do it here. I will call them tomorow [monday] and request the whole thing. However, i was wondering if there's anyway this message could reach the Dev Team. Maybe they would be interested in buying an iphone in brazil, have it unlocked and shipped to them. IMHO, i think this could help them figure out what you need to really unlock the 3g.

The Dev Team already have their hands on unlocked phones, so I don't think they need them. Besides, if it were that simple, they would have unlocked the phone ages ago.

you are wrong. "grid" (which I assume you mean the cellular network and the base stations) has nothing to do with this.
simply, when gsm was founded, the committee decided there should be a test option, MCC 001 and MNC 01, that should be accepted by any locked phone for the sake of field testing.
these solutions are exploiting this probability.

believe or not, there is nothing new in those methods - I have seen some in Romania as early as 1995. it was just not a "flex pcb" - unaffordable that time -, but a PIC12C509 or similar hard-wired to the inside of the phone (Nokia 2110).

by "sim unlock", he most probably meant turbosim and the like. that is, what is considered "hardware unlock" in the scope of iphone 3g ATM.

Since I'm no programmer, I just wanted to know: exactly how close (or far) is everyone the 3G unlock? Is it something we can expect in the near future, do people know what has to be done, or are everyone still on basic levels, trying to figure out how the lock works?

Indeed was wondering the same. All you see is people trying to unlock, yet no time interval is cleared out, and yet no clear improvement is shown..

So can anyone confirm the time period interval for the unlock?

It has been like 3 month, what shall we expect?~!

There is no time frame unfortunately. It happens when it happens if it ever does.

I was more interested in knowing if it's still theoretical, or if some progress has been made with where they've gotten it partially to work or something like that.
