They only way to do what I believe was attempted here was to boot the computer in "Target Disk Mode" and create an image with Disk Utility via firewire. This is something that is done in networks to create system images for similar hardware so if you loose a hard drive you can net boot the machine with a replacement drive and be able to have a restore image that puts back the setup for lets say Intel Mac with iMovie, iPhoto, and Open Office already installed.
Depending on the bundled software, you may be fine purchasing a Retail DVD of lastest OS available. If you have your dream Applications already installed (and not working), create a disk image when booting from Install DVD using Disk Utiility. Select the "From Folder" Option and save it as read only using no compression. If that actually takes, then delete the partition scheme you currently have and erase using the "Zero Out Data" security option to confirm hard drive has a chance.
OK Drive survives the overnight erasure then there are two ways to go:
1) restore the disk image from folder you made earlier and proceed with the installation option of "Archive and Install" that may give you a chance of making that dream Applications installed work.
OR
2) select "Erase and Install" (yes again) to have a clean OS installed and try your luck dragging and dropping things back in.
Either way repair disk permissions after the installation and if it came with 10.4 get to 10.5 for a time machine backup that puts a restore about 30 minutes away after formating the drive.
Or for the shotgun solution, call 1-800-APL-CARE and pay the minimal charge for a restore set of disks to begin anew
