i want to buy a cheap mac in order to develop applications for the iphone.

and should i buy a laptop or a desktop?

If you're looking for a new Mac, the Mac mini and the white MacBook are good options. They range from USD$500 to $1000 depending on your configuration.

Laptop v. Desktop: Your preference. Developing apps for the iPhone wouldn't make a difference.

As long as you have an Intel Mac, you can develop applications for the iPhone. eBay and Craigslist are good sources if the prices for new Macs are too high.
