Sorry, I don't think you can. If it is a disk that came with Macbook it is most likely only for that machine.

you need the retail version of Leopard

Actually, I don't think so.

There are specific OS X builds that go with specific models.

(Just wait for Snow Leopard then get the discs, get them cheaper...)

well, what it is i have received a macbook pro 3.1, it has come loaded with Tiger 10.4.9, i have a leopard 10.5 retail disk. when i try to install it tells me that" it cannot install on this machine" its driving me round the bend. i cannot see why this will not work

What i may try is taking the HDD from the Mac Pro, Putting it in my MacBook, then before it restarts and boots into the 'Welcome screen' i will put it back in my pro machine. <- can anyone see an issue with this???

I don't think the HDD will make any difference, I think the installer looks for the model number, and even if you "bypass" that check ,I am still not sure that Macbook installation disk has all needed drivers for Macbook Pro.

Google on how to make Retail Disk from Machine specific and you will see that its not that easy. You can convert upgrade Leopard disk(the one that requires Tiger installed to work) to Retail, but not machine specific.
