Default Macbook keyboard and trackpad not working...

Yesterday I turned on my Macbook and the keyboard and trackpad are no longer deciding to work. I am not sure if something went wrong during the 10.5.7 update or something, but neither will respond. The caps lock light on the keyboard won't turn on, and the trackpad accepts no gestures. I also hooked up an external USB mouse and that didn't work either. Any guidance in getting this fixed/diagnosing the problem would be great Thanks!

Hi guys, my advice to both of you is to perform an SMC RESET, This is the system management controller and it can sometimes get messed up over time.

Google 'SMC RESET' and follow the instructions for your particular model as it varies from one model to the next.

Hopefully that should get you back in action.

I have read that OS updates can also sometimes cause this, if you can, use an external keyboard and mouse then download the 10.5.8 COMBO update and run it. If that doesn't work then I would try to boot from your OS install DVD and either repair permissions or repair the HDD itself.

If all else fails then a visit to an apple genius may be your only course of action.

EDIT: Check this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread....sageID=6571108 you never know!

Just one question: if you press the left-option (aka. alt) key during startup, will your computer boot up into the startup volume selection screen—i.e. the screen where you select a boot camp volume. See if your trackpad/keyboard works.

And if they don't see if external peripherals work.

Post results, I'll see what I can do.

The trackpad and keyboard are working well befor starting OS X
I mean it's work in start up mode when I press and hold option key before Apple logo appear, and after start up and log in, it doesn't respond at all even using external mouse or keyboard USB and CapsLock green light not working!
I'm so disappointed

Can you boot from installation disk and use disk utility to repair the HDD or repair permissions?

EDIT: You could also try a PRAM and NVRAM reset, hold command/option/r/p when you switch on the laptop, but before the gray screen. The Mac should reset itself and you'll hear the startup sound again, release the keys and let it boot.

Unfortunatlly, I don't know how to boot using installation disk and disk utility to repair HDD or permissions!

And if I do it, is it risky procedure that may lead to loss my data?!

to boot from your installation disc, put it into the drive while your machine and as you boot hold down the 'C' key, this should boot the disc, if not you can switch the machine off and hold the 'alt/option' key this will allow you to choose your boot device.

After you have booted into the installer got to the menu bar and click utilities>disk utility next highlight your hard drive and choose to repair permissions. Once this has completed close the installer and reboot into osx. If you still have no keyboard and mouse you could try repairing the disk in the same way as permissions. You should not loose any data in this way.

If you still have no keyboard/trackpad, as a last resort you could try an install over the top of your existing install follow this guide to perform this operation: Howto; Archive and Install to fix scrapped Leopard installation without losing data - The macosxhints Forums

I hope we can get you back in action soon.

EDIT: I just found out that if you boot the machine with the applications installation disc that came with the computer in the drive holding the 'D' key it will go into diagnostic mode and this should tell you for sure if the keyboard and trackpad are knackered.
