Hi all,

I am new to this so please bear with me.
I have an unlocked 1st gen iphone that I want to upgrade to the most recent software that will enable me to visit the app store and get use those new apps out there. From the "dev team blog site I am directed to download the pwnagetool which I have but its a"torrent" file which I can't seem to be able to open or use in my mac.
Can someone please take me through this in steps and language I can understand? My iphone is on vers 1.1.4(4A102)

Torrent files are just signposts to where the real file is located. You need a torrent program like uTorrent, vuze or transmission or even the opera web browsers which can use the .torrent file to download the real file.

Once downloaded you will get a dmg file. Double click to mount this and copy the pwnagetool app to your applications folder. You can then eject the disk image and run the pwnagetool application from the applications folder.

Then go to
the following guide at iClarified and follow that.

Thanks for the reply. I followed your advice and was able to mount the pwnagetool torrent disk on my desktop and saved it into my apps folder.

However, as I read the instructions you recommended to do the upgrade, it says "do not enter the DFU mode" if your phone is already unlocked and jailbroken.It goes on to say just update using the modified "IPSW" file and update from it????

Well my phone is unlocked(jailbroken also I presume) as I use different sim cards it it from all over the world as I travel.

I am not sure how to proceed as I don't want to "brick" my phone!

I remember from another thread that the best way to update from 1.1.x was to first update to 3.0.x using quickpwn, and then use pwnagetool to update to 3.1.x.

But the question about DFU mode is interesting. I have read iclarified's instruction for using pwnage tool to update to 3.1.2. and it is suggesting one should enter DFU. But dev team specifically says "no need to enter DFU". So will this work:

- Download pwnage tool, originial ispw (+boot loaders)
- Use pwnage tool to create a new ispw
- Connect phone to iTunes and restore
