It's a black mb (early 08) and the safe boot didn't help. Have tried with one shift key, both, and nothing.

It is the same I have...
can you attack a USB mouse and try it? Dont know what went wrong for you. Have exactly the same model and sucessfully applied the patch.

When booting into safe mode, did a windows pop up, telling you that you are in safe mode? If not, you did not enter safe mode.
The Macbook has to be shut down (not restart). Then press the start button and hold shift - keep holding it 8only the left one). May take a few minutes and a window has to pop up.

please try again and report back.

Tried a USB mouse and will initially light up once mac turns on, but won't work after that. Tried safe booting again and each time I do, it'll take me to my login screen with safe boot in red, but I can't type in my password or move the mouse.

I guess something happened while the system tried to rebuild the cache, dont know. Besides me some of the mods here tried it aswell - no problems.

A workaround: start from dvd, download the combo-update 10.5.6 then at
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...mboupdate.html
start the updater then and choose the internal HD. This will do.

this involves a bigger download but brings the Macbook back to standard 10.5.6. I often had to use it when my Macs run into trouble.

Ok, have here a unibody MacBook Pro. Will try now volks method, and see if it can recognize my iPhone in DFU mode.
Ill post more details after I try it here.
Abras

EDIT:

WORKED WORKED WORKED.
Thanks a lot Volks, really awesome job.

My thoughts about this: Unibody Macbook (PRO) while at 10.5.5 maybe had different pluggin kexts from the regular 10.5.5 Macbooks.
Thats why it didnt work before. But now it works, cause this kexts used in Volks app, are from a regular Macbook, not a unibody one.
To see if im right, we could get Volks app, and get this 2 kexts from a 10.5.5 unibody Macbook. Run it again at a regular Macbook, and see if it works. I think it wont. Anyways thanks a lot Volks, finally a Unibody Macbook Pro working with an iPhone in DFU mode.

Great!!!!
I will try this one tomorrow. It makes sense to me. The "regular" 10.5.5 files are working - we know that. The unibody Macbook had 10.5.5, BUT - I guess apple had already used the two files from 10.5.6.
Replacing them with the "regular" from 10.5.5 - the one's in the package of the Automator app - make DFU work on unibody Macbooks - cool.

Let me point out one thing:
All thanks goes to the iPhone Dev Team. besides doing all the great work for unlocking our iPhone's the Dev Team pubished in their last blog entry on the upcoming unlock one additional note (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/6512...on-to-be-jolly)

DFU Issues in OS X 10.5.6
Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.
We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -
1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)
I just have been following this hint and tried to make a small (and easy to develop) solution for all of us - not wanting to deal with Terminal, sudo and stuff - so again: credit goes to the Dev Team.

happy hacking,
v.

I used it in my iMac and now the USBs port of the apple keyboard does'nt work anymore, when I connect any device it says that has insufficient power. What can I do to solve that?
