A hub with its own power supply. USB specs demand 5V on the port, passive hubs (no power supply) dont offer then usually. Not important when connecting something like a mouse, but...

Is the "leopard Install DVD", the 2 Mac OSX install discs that came with the comp (Disc 1 and Disc 2)?

i tryed the automator method...yes i use 10.5.6

Did the folder containg the Automator app sit on the Desktop when starting it??

no it was in the folder Install_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_5 folder
