about my own experiences of the 10.5.6 DFU fix, before I found this thread.
Thx al lot for the information. I had downloaded the package from Apple but did not try it out cause it replaces the complete "surrounding" package not just the two that cause the DFU trouble.
The only important thing with the Automator solution is to put the folder with the Script on the desktop - thats all.

One more: Once you got your iPhone pwnaged you could revert the "downgrade". You would just have to put the two bundles from the backup folder (the one that is beeing created during the script's run) into the folder that contains the Automator script (replacing the two from 10.5.5 that come with the script) and then run the Automator app again ;-)

No problem.

Thanks for the info re. reverting. Handy even though I don't seem to need it with your fix

I guess the problem will be solved anyway with the next Mac OS X release. The Dev Team tells us that the behavior in 10.5.6 is a bug, not a feature ;-)

Default Can someone re-upload the IOUSBFamily.kext file?

I want to get my keyboard/mouse back in action and am using the tutorial generously posted by unkle here:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f146...htm#post375941

But the Rapidshare link to the IOUSBFamily.kext file is expired/overused. Can someone please re-post a link? Thanks, E

BTW, I'm using a 3g firewire ipod in disk mode as my "install disk" which is how I originally got leopard on my system. I'll update with my experience with this setup (although it should be the same).

It can still be used, the download works. maxbe you just reached your limit at rapidshare. In post #1 there is one more download link at mediafire, this one should work aswell.

Well, I clicked on this link (RapidShare: Easy Filehosting) in unkle's post and I get this message at rapidshare:

Error

This file is neither allocated to a Premium Account, or a Collector's Account, and can therefore only be downloaded 10 times.

This limit is reached.

To download this file, the uploader either needs to transfer this file into his/her Collector's Account, or upload the file again. The file can later be moved to a Collector's Account. The uploader just needs to click the delete link of the file to get further information.

As for the link in post one here:
RapidShare: Easy Filehosting
That one works fine, but is it the SAME file as from unkle's post? I thought the one from unkle's post was the IOUSBFamily_kext file from 10.5.6, not 10.5.5. Will it work either way? Sorry, I'm a little nervous in the first place about messing with terminal, so I want to make SURE everything goes right.

Default I have my mouse and keyboard back!!!

what we have: macbook (1.5 y.o.), leo 10.5.6
what s the problem: after the fix, regular apple keyboard & logitech mouse + macbook's keyboard & touchpad not working, no way to install 10.5.6 combo update
what i try: boot in safe mode, boot in single mode, fixing permissions (leo boot dvd > disk utility) - no answer from usb ports
what we need: 1 flash drive (any capacity), 1 pc or mac (except not working mac), leopard install dvd, original file ( RapidShare: Easy Filehosting ), 10.5.6 combo update ( Apple - Downloads - Mac OS X Updates - Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update )

1. copy file (IOUSBFamily.kext) to your flash drive (before downloading file, empty flash drive)
make a folder structure on flash drive like this:

System>Library>Extensions
put in Extensions folder file "IOUSBFamily.kext"

the way will look like this: FLASH_DRIVE_NAME/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext

capitalization is very important!!

2. boot leo install dvd (hold "alt" button after power on), then go to "Utilities" > "Disk Utility"

click on your macintosh hard disk and go to "Restore" section
drag your flash drive and drop it in "Source" empty bar
drag you mac hard drive and drop in "Destination" empty bar

DO NOT MARK "Erase destination"!!!

Then click on "Restore"
wait
quit Disk Utility

3. go to "Utilities" > "Terminal" and type:
chown -R root:wheel "/Volumes/NAME_OF_YOUR_MACINTOSH_HD/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/"
chroot "/Volumes/NAME_OF_YOUR_MACINTOSH_HD/"
kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions

capitalization is very important!!

quit Terminal

4. go back to Disk Utility
in section "First Aid" click on "Repair Disk Permissions"
wait
quit Disk Utility

5. restart your mac and hold "shift" button. mac os will boot in safe mode whit working usb ports

6. install 10.5.6 combo update

well done =)
IT WORKED! IT WORKED! IT WORKED!!!

Well, I couldn't wait any longer so I copied the IOUSBFamily.kext file from the non-working mac (over network) to working mac, selected "show package contents", copied the 2 backup .kext files into the proper folder and BAM! Had my own version of a working IOUSBFamily.kext file!

Here's a link to my IOUSBFamily.kext file. Hope someone else can use it! (I'll keep it up for a couple months at least... if it's down just pm me and I'll put it back up)

I followed unkle's instructions TO THE LETTER, and it worked perfectly. THANKS UNCLE! Here are some notes on my experience (Warning: total noob stuff in here, nothing new for the pros):

- Disk Permissions: There was no feedback (ie nothing happened) for about 5 minutes, then all of a sudden it fixed the permissions on a bunch of .kext files, so I knew it was working.

- Terminal: In the intructions unkle gives, the commands are not one big string, but you just hit enter for every line. (I know, it's obvious to most, but this confused me a bit.) Also, terminal is fairly unresponsive and doesn't give you any feedback (that I can tell) that it's doing anything at all. Just follow the instructions EXACTLY and it should work.

- iPod as Leo Disk:I used an iPod (3g firewire) as the leo boot disk, worked great! Great tutorial on iPod as boot disk here: here

- Safe Mode: I've never used it, and was pleased to find that network connections and usb ports, etc work as normal. This made it easy to download the 10.5.6 combo update.

Thanks again to uncle, volkspost, and all who helped me finally get my mac back!

Mac OS X 10.5.6 was released on December 15th, 2008. It disables recognition of a device (like the iPhone) in DFU mode. It is not known if this is intentionally disabled by Apple or just a bug. The iPhone Dev Team believes "this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple."
All credit for the solution goes to the iPhone Dev Team - as usual, I have just developing this easy to use app!!!

One solution ist to replace two plugin kexts with the ones from Mac OS X 10.5.5 and then rebuild the kextcache. This innvolves some knowledge of the system and heavy use of the application Terminal.

This is where the Automator programm Fix_DFU_10_5_6 comes into action. I put it together to do the complete job with one mouse click. The user has to be logged into his Mac with administrator privileges (usually the account you used while setting up your Mac) and has to provide the admin's password.

The programm then:
1. checks if you are at Mac OS X 10.5.6 or better (if not will quit)
2. show a readme
3. quits all running apps (with save option)
4. backup the original files (AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.6) in a new folder on your Desktop
5. ask for your admin password
6. copy AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.5 into the desired location on your Mac
7. set owner:group and permissions
8. rebuild the kextcache
9. reboot your Mac

Right at the end the programm will tell you that the cache is beeing rebuild, just let it do its job.
Your Mac will automatically reboot when done - DFU is enabled then.

How-to (see pic below)

Download the package (zip-archive) at
Rapidshare
or
Mediafire

Unzip the archive (pic 1) and place the folder "Install_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_5" on your Desktop (important). Open the folder and start the Programm "Fix_DFU_10_5_6" (pic 2).

You will see the Readme box (click "OK") (pic 3), then you have to provide your admin password (pic 4). The programm then will do its job.
At the end the Finder will open another dialog box telling you that the cache is beeig rebuild (pic 5). Klick "OK" or just leave the box alone. After a couple seconds your Mac will reboot automatically - done, DFU is enabled again.

On the Desktop you will find a new folder called "Backup_IOUSBFamily_kext_10_5_6", it contains the two 10.5.6 files

Hope this helps,
v.

I heard that after you re-enable DFU and pwnage the iphone, that the DFU must be disabled again, as it could "ruin" you MBP....is this true? and if so how would i go about disabling it again...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers guys

It does bot ruin anything here.

If you want back the original, read post 171 on this page, or install Apples Combo Updater 10.5.6.
