I'm on a 2g phone
1.1.4 fw (jailbroken, ativated and unlocked via ziphone)
on a mac (iBook)

I have pwnage tool 2.1 and all related files needed to upgrade to custom fw 2.1
via pwnage.

-neuter and loader bin files in folder on the desktop
- pwnage 2.1 tool app in applications folder
-itunes helper turned off via Activity monitor

-run pwnage 2.1 to create custom ispw
at end of pwnge 2.1

-I Put m phone into DFU (via prompts) quit pwnage 2.1 and then
connect phone to computer.

****Is itunes supposed to be running already?

itunes detects phone in DFU and then I "alt" click restore and nav
to my custom ispw

Now

1 -do i HAVE to use iTunes 8? read all sorts of curious stuff
2 -will 7.7 work...is it more of a sure bet?
3 -does using iTUnes 8 eliminate the DFU mode stuff?


Then

do I just sync my phone afterwards and cal, contacts, sms, etc are put back based on last sync?

just need little help before I jump in headfirst.
would like to do this today

itunes 8 works fine with pwnagetool / quickpwn

Just restore with a 2.1 non custom first then put the phone into DFU and shift/restore using your home made custom 2.1 firmware.

so DL iTunes 8

do a restore to 2.1 via iTunes (wich will relock, deactivate, and unjailbreak)

Then run pwnage tool 2.1 process to create custom ispw

then DFU at the end
and restore with custom.

That's it?

That's the way I do it because I just like to start with a fresh clean install before pwning.

You could also upgrade from 1.1.4 but you will end up locked to activation screen what ever you do because you are updating from 1.1.4 - 04.04.05 baseband to 2.x - 04.05.04 baseband.

when I do the upgrade to the 2.1 fw via itunes...

I do a restore with non custom fw 2.1 file ( iphone1,1_2.1_5F136_restore.ispw ) that i already downloaded and have in the folder with the bins for BL39 and 46.

Using iTunes 8

Restore with apple iphone1,1_2.1_5F136_restore.ispw firmware then put the phone into DFU mode and restore with your custom 2.1 firmware.

did everything run smoothly?

everything went like clockwork.

now just waiting for it to resync all my stuff back onto the phone.

took about an hour from start to finish.

i spent 30 min looking through the apps in the Cydia portion
browsing as I thought there were fun apps and stuff in there but there
isn't.

I also had to try to get into DFU 2x ..second time worked.

so yes
I went from 2g iPhone on 1.1.4 via ZiPhone
to firmware 2.1 via Pwnagetool 2.1 and iTunes 8
