I just tried it with an unpwned iPhone 1.1.1 Fresh out of the box, untouched.

Recovery mode upgrade failed with an error.

I then put the phone into DFU mode with iTunes 7.7 installed on my Windows, which did work (I got the blank screen).

I used the custom firmware 2.0 that I generated with PwnageTool on my mac, and the unpwned 1.1.1 accepted the software.

Hopefully this dispels any myths that DFU doesn't work on Windows and that Recovery Mode -does- accept it.

I can confirm that going from 1.1.4 to pwnd 2.0 DOES NOT require either a previously pwnd iPhone or DFU mode. I went straight from recovery mode (kicked in by iLiberty) and then 7.7 shift-restore and the ever so wonderful pwnd restore file.
Just to repeat, I had a vanilla 1.1.4 version.
YAHOOZI !!! and thanks to everyone on the Dev team.

Let me re-iterate again as well. If by any chance it didn't work for you when you shift click in iTunes and selecting a custom ipsw file, either in DFU or Recovery, it could be due to the ipsw file.

Like I said in my post, I downloaded 3 different ipsw (I guess it is best if I made it myself) and only one of them worked. The others error out immediately from iTunes 7.7 with a 1403 error.

But this method is so simple and you don't need to do or install anything on your PC or the iPhone itself.

Thx for your confirmation Cekle,

I was a bit lost as I don't know so much your community and who I should believe and who doesn't fully undesrtand what he is doing

On the other hand, I would still appreciate to understand why the DFU is working for you with iTunes 7.7 and not for me... I will dig a bit more into this!

Why are so many people saying that you need iTunes to get into DFU?

Restoring a custom ipsw in "Recovery Mode" won't work with an iPhone that has never been pwned.

I know you may be a moderator and have 3,300 posts but unfortunately you are wrong my iphone was previously unpawnd and brand new and I restored it with itunes 7.7 in dfu mode and a custom ipsw fw....my iphone was v2.0 fw original and I installed a custom 2.0 firmware on my 3g phone...it only jailbreaks it...it doesn't unlock it...

XianLi: Why are you insiting that it won't work ??? The whole reason for me starting this threat was that it was surprized that i COULD restore a custom firmware on an unpwnd phone. I also thought that it would not be possible, but others have been reporting that it worked for them too !!!

It would be really nice if someon could tell us why this is possible
