iTunes Billing Information Leak
A few years back I created a mac.com email address, and used that address as my iTunes account as well. After the 30 day trial I decided not to pay for the email service and it was stated that I could still use that account for other things such as iTunes, registering my Apple purchases, ect.. without having to pay for the email service. I continued using it as my iTunes account which means my iTunes account username is "xxxx@mac.com"
This has been fine for years, except today when I logged into iTunes I was greeted with a message to update my billing information. I noticed my address was changed to someone elses, after getting the runaround from Apple I was finally informed that someone purchased a mobile me account using the same account name that I had originally used 3 years ago for email and gave up, but still use today as my iTunes account. As a result it is now linked to my iTunes account and overwriting some of my billing information with his mobile me account's and I assume he probably can see some of my information as well. Since I don't care about that address, I suggested that they just transfer my purchases to a new iTunes account and cancel my existing one so it won't conflict with this person's mobile me account.. I was told there was NO WAY this could be done and I should just create a new iTunes account for all new purchases, remove the billing source from the original, and just authorize my computer for both the new and old iTunes account. They didn't seemed concerned at all about the security breach here.. I asked for escalation but was told there really isn't anything that can be done.
I'm curious what everyone else's thoughts are on this situation, and wondering if anyone else has heard of this happening.
