I purchased ziphone and ran ziphone -j -u. Text scrools by and it seems to be doing something but when it is over I'm back to the jail screen (cable & itunes logo and emergency call slider).

ziphone site says it should work with 1.1.2
readme.txt says
Note that after running a jailbreak on a "fresh" phone, you will need to manually install the "BSD Subsystem" package from Installer before many other programs will work. This package is NOT included in Ziphone due to size restrictions of the jailbreaking ramdisk.

but I read this to mean that I should be out of jail before new steps.

my friend if your are on an at&t contac then everything should be fine but if you r not and at&t then u r supposed to use the option -j -a -u but from your post it is clear that you have just used only jail break and unlock so that is why it is at the emergncy call slide so try doin -j -a - u eveything should work well
