Things have been pretty stagnant around here lately, so I figure that it's a good time to write something up for any newbies that might be hanging around. Right now, the be-all, end-all of iPhone software modification is PwnageTool.

Pwnage is pretty easy to use, so there's really no sense in going over how to use it. Pwnage does basically three things. It activates (iPhone only), which disables the emergency call only mode and allows you to get to the springboard (the iPhone desktop, basically). It jailbreaks, which, for the sake of simplicity, means it puts Cydia on your phone/ipod which allows you to install unapproved apps. Finally (and most importantly for a lot of people) it unlocks (obiviously, iPhone only). This allows the iPhone to operate on any GSM network. There does seem to be some confusion about exactly what it can do to what devices though, so I drew up a little chart for y'all .

This chart is according to the current situation as of the date listed above.



I believe the chart is pretty self-explanatory, if not a little pointless now that the 3G unlock is out.

Also, if you want to J/A/U (Jailbreak/Activate/Unlock) your iPhone/iPod without restoring, then you should take a look at QuickPwn.

P.P.S.-- If you have some free time, you should check out my old tutorial post. Some of it is outdated, but there's a lot of good terminology and FAQs to munch on.

To put it nicely compkid is trying to say is the 3g unlock will be out when its out and trust me you will know when. As far as the 2g ipod touch jailbreak well that will be out when its out and you will know when as well. For now please be respectful to hack0 staff and dont post nonsense and such asking for the release date of 3g unlock and 2g ipod touch jailbreak. That is all

I wonder which jailbreak/unlock tool is currently the most recommended for windows users? would that be WinPwn 2.5? (if I understand correctly, this version does not yet support firmware 2.1)

*Edited - the consensus seems to be that QuickPWN for Windows is the best tool available at this time, is this correct?
