Simple recovery/restore mode and DFU are two of the essential modes we need every now and then to archive firmware upgrades and downgrades. Sometimes we have to kick the iPhone out of these modes.
Up to firmware 1.1.4 we had a great helper in iLiberty, for firmware 2.x on 2G and 3G iPhones there are easy manual steps. I have just put them together as a reference. Get the iPhone into simple restore/recovery mode. When in this mode on the iPhone the iTunes logo and the USB cable is shown (Apple default), or "Steve" (Standard Pwnage) or your custom recovery logo. 1. Disconnect iPhone from your PC/Mac if not done already. 2. Hold Power/Sleep until the red slider shows up, slide to shut the iPhone down. If this aint work hold Power/Sleep and Home until the iPhone shuts down. Put it aside. 3. Start iTunes on your PC/Mac and make sure to have the latest version. 4. On the iPhone press Home button and keep holding it while connecting the iPhone to your PC/Mac. 5. iTunes will detect an iPhone in recovery mode, the iPhone shown the recovery logo. Get the iPhone into DFU mode. When in this mode the iPhone screen is black. 1. Connect the iPhone and your Mac/PC 2. Shut down iTunes 3. Hold Power/Sleep until the red slider shows up, slide to shut the iPhone down. If this aint work hold Power/Sleep and Home until the iPhone shuts down. 3. Hold Start/Sleep and Home for 10 seconds (I count like 100, 200, 300, ..) 4. Let go of Start/Sleep but keep holding Home until... 5. ... iTunes starts up and finds an iPhone in restore/recovery mode. The iPhone screen is black. Kick the iPhone out of simple restore/recovery mode and make it reboot. 1. Connect iPhone and your PC/Mac, quit iTunes. 2. Hold Start/Sleep and Home for 10 seconds (I always count 100, 200, 300,...) 3. Let go of Home button but keep holding Start/Sleep until the Apple logo on the iPhone screen shows up. 4. Let go of Start/Sleep, the iPhone will boot Kick the iPhone out of DFU mode and make it reboot. I always disconnect iPhone and Mac/PC but can be done even when connected. 1. Hold Start/Sleep and Home until the Apple logo shows up on the iPhone screen. This may take up to 30-60 seconds. 2. Let go of both buttons, the iPhone will reboot. hope this helps

DFU = Black screen simple restore/recovery = USB cable & iTunes logo or custom logo like "Steve" Which one do you have? If DFU, hold home and Start/Sleep for 30-50 seconds until the iPhone re-boots If simple restore/recovery and the above (post #1) wont help you could restore to Apple firmware in iTunes. BUT DO THIS ONLY IF YOU HAVE AN iPhone 2G. DO NOT DO THIS ONE ON A 3G!!!!

Hello All,
I was wondering if someone may be able to help me ( well my nephew actually) He's only 17 years old and he has saved his pocket money for like a year literally to afford an iphone. Now being the simple boy he is, he has tried to jailbreak it and messed it all up and so he has called on his uncle to try and save his @ss This is the problem. Iphone 3G 8GB. We think that he upgraded to 2.2.1 then used QuickPWN on Win to jailbreak. Now the phone is in recovery mode and the simpleton that he is he didnt realise he installed the pineapple boot logo and steve blurting in russian recovery mode caption. Now the problem being I can't restore it for the life of me! I have an iphone 3g too which is jailbroken but never had any of these problems. Tried DFU mode, it's fine, Itunes picks the phone up but just serial number no models or anything else and tells me it needs restoring. When I try to restore I get Error Code 6 ( Recovery mode or DFU) No matter what I do always error code 6. Funny thing is that if I use DFU mode i get a white screen first. Now the thing is, I notice when it is preparing for restore the device has the apple logo come up with the status bar, the status bar starts and then the phone just reboots and I am back to being stuck looking at russian steve again ![]() Does anyone know how I can overcome this issue. Someone here must have some idea. Many Many Thanks for reading this. I really really hope I can save this little guy's iphone. I wouldnt even mind paying a small fee to someone for their time to help me. Thanks |

Hey guys, I was getting the error (13) too but somehow something I did worked.
Step 1: Make a sandwich. (chill for a mo basically) Step 2: Find a different iPhone cable, blow the ends making sure theres no dust etc Step3: Connect through the back USB's of your computer Step 4: Pray. (I also shouted at said iPhone and held the home button a little while it began to say ''preparing iPhone for restore'' Somehow that worked. I had been on a custom version of 3.0 (redsn0w 7.1 did the jailbreaking I believe) It wouldn't connect to iTunes so I restored. Hope this helps somehow ![]() DFU didn't seem to help, iTunes brought it back to recovery which annoyed me. |
