Default Iphone 2G baseband damaged

Hi all, a friend of mine tried to update his iphone but the result is a big mess.
I don't know which procedure he followed but now actually the iphone i an ipod touch...
No wifi, no imei, no ccid...the baseband is corrupted and neither the modem firmware is showed.
I've tried to erase the eprom and to reflash with bbupdater through terminal, the procedure seems ok, but when finished pings the baseband withoud succes and starts again from the beginning in a loop.
Honestly I don't know what to do...if someone can help it would be really appreciated!
BTW sorry for my bad english!

Have you tried iLiberty? One of the scripts you can run through that can fix this kind of problem.

Do you know what they actually did to get in this state? Did they play with boot neuter?

Thank you for answering.
I've made some tries with iliberty, but I don't remember precisely what...
Honestly it's difficult to say what my friend did, he's not so expert with this kind of stuff and probably he played with some programs randomly to sim unlock the iphone.
I did not mention that it's an AT&T iphone.
Bootneuter get stuck with getting connection info or something similar.
I'm afraid it's an hardware problem...could it be?!?

It is actually quite hard to completely brick the 2G iPhone - so I would keep on trying with software fixes before you give up. Search around for threads relating to problems with bootneuter and downgrading baseband.

The key is to downgrade to OS 1.1.4, run either kiphone or iLiberty+ to force downgrade the baseband.

Once you can get the baseband working at 1.1.4 you can upgrade to 3.x again.

Never interrupt a flash or erase of the baseband by restarting the iPhone, always set screen lock to never before you begin flashing baseband.

Now I have 1.0.2 installed, I've tried with iliberty but the iphone got stuck in a loop with white writings on the iphone display...
The problem is that if I try to restore any of the firmwares with itunes the process never ends, on the iphone I can see the apple and the bar full, itunes says restoring the iphone but it's freezed.
I will try with kiphone...but what sounds strange to me it's that from terminal the eprom can be erased and updated with bbupdater, all seems to be fine until the whole process it's over, then I get "baseband unresponsive" or something similar...
