I have an iphone (version 1.0.2) which was cracked... I want to re-format/upgrade it to version 3.0. What is the best and the easiest way to do this? And how can I take a backup of my contacts and other data?

to virginize your iphone FIRST.
From there you can upgrade to firmware 2.x (use quickpwn) or 3.x (use redsnow)

you need to spend some time reading.

But the last part of this process mentions - Dont interfere while the script is working, just be patient. It takes a while after each step (question). After processing the last step (takes a while -> "reflash the firmware") the script will end with
"Exiting now..."

You're done, DFU restore to Firmware 2.2.1!

Does that mean it is restored to version 2.2.1? If yes, then as you say I need to use Redsnow to upgrade to version 3.0. Read about it on iclarified.com - iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

That means I first move from 1.0.2 => 2.2.1 using iliberty => 3.0 using Redsnow.

No, go direct to 3.0. The tiutorial was written when 2.2.1 was the latest firmware. I'll edit the post,

Im sorry, but I am kinda confused.

The phone I have is a 1.0.2 version (unlocked about 18 months or so ago). To virginise and update it to 3.0 version - all I need to do is follow these instructions:

You have to virginize the iPhone first cause the unlocking method at firmware 1.0.2 (ANYsim 1.0.2) corrupted the seczone, This only happened with the combination. This is what the tutorial (link) is doning: "healing" the seczone. After that you can DFU restore to firmware 3, the iPhone will be locked the.
The second tutorial takes care for jailbreak, activation and unlock at firmware 3 when done,

On backup: Sync the iPhone with iTunes and make sure addresses and stuff get synced with outlook )Win) or addressbook (Mac), get the photos from camera roll...
Even though iTunes will probably offer to recover data from the 1.0.2 backup once redsn0w is finished but I would not recommend doing so. You'd get back tons of old and outdated prefsfiles that may lead to problems at fw 3.

Also, any easy way to backup all the .db files (sms) and the notes? Im just gonna start this process now, so would want to take this backup. Finished syncing the contacts and copying the photos.
