I have iPhone 2G 1.0.2 (modem firmware 03.14.08_G) and I would like to upgrade to 2.2.1 and unlock it. Please if someone could help me with it. What I need to do?

If the iPhone is unlocked at firmware 1.0.2 with AnySIM 1.0.2 it is recommended to first repair the seczone that got corrupted through AnySIM 1.0.2.

Once done - takes less then one hour - use iTunes 8.1.x and DFU restore to firmware 2.2.1. Then use one of these tutorials:

or
iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your 2.x.x 2G iPhone (Mac) [Updated 2.2.1]

Once jailbroken/activated/unlocked connect the iPhone to iTunes. iTunes will probably offer to "restore data from a backup" or "setup as a new iPhone". Choose "setup as a new iPhone" otherwise you'll get back outdated prefs that might cause trouble.
After that sync as usual and you are set.

I did a research on the internet and found that some people said there is no need to do virginization before upgrading from 1.0.2 to 2.2. Is this true?

Thats true some people have updated without virginization, but its a risky & if you find your self with a corrupted seczone no wifi etc etc you may never get the phone working correctly again.

Follow volks guide it the safest option
