Angry problem to actually upgrade before unlocking the newer version!!!

hey, im having some probs with my 1.1.1 iPhone, i just want the latest software and its benefits but still to have an unlocked phone. the unlocking is no problem since i have Ziphone working well but my problem is to actually update from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4

my guess is that this is an unusual problem but still, a problem indeed. whenever i try to upgrade the phone, it unzips and then i only get an error message saying i dont have enough memory on the phone for the update. and every time this happens, the phone bricks. ive tried to remove every 3rd part app and file from the phone but still no difference! could anyone be so kind to tell me what i can do simply to upgrade?

regards,
icelander

Have you tried "RESTORE" instead of update?

well yeah of course, that was my first reaction. but the thing is that when you use restore it actually updates the software before it restores the phone, so i cant even restore!
this kinda looks like apple is forcing you to upgrade if you have a problem but its kinda silly if your problem is to upgrade :S
