There are so many post about signal issues and dead wifi, so i thourght a poll could hint if (and how) these problems are correlated with different unlocking methods.

Hi,
I've HW (and also SW of course) unlocked iPhone and only signal problems I've noticed are caused by baseband crashes which I've traced down into some unclean usage of baseband by Cello.app. When I use this application and phone goes to sleep - baseband is resetted when it wokes up. Without this application everything works perfectly :p [1.1.2 OTB, BB 04.02.13_G, BL 3.9_M3S2, 1.1.2] happy unlocking

That's a lot of poll options...lol
Those with Wi-Fi issues, have you tried version 2.0? Restore and try the 2.0 version located at iclarified.com N41 http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=667

Hi nextsux,
I am the developer of Cello, and after a bit of investigation, here is my take on the baseband crash issue. I've been testing Cello quite extensively myself on 1.1.1 (with 4.01.13_G baseband) and 1.1.3 (with 4.03.13_G baseband) and it seems pretty stable. I upgraded through 1.1.2 (with 4.02.13_G baseband), but pretty much went to 1.1.3 immediately. I own a week 43 1.1.1 OTB 39BL phone, upgraded to 1.1.3 (4.03.13_G) using ziPhone 1.0 and unlocked using anySIM. Having said that, I just did some googling and noticed users of Navizon and LocateMe have also reported baseband crashes after they close their respective app and put the phone into sleep mode. See threads here: http://www.navizon.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=6179 http://www.soneso.com/blog/2008/01/locateme-03.html Also interestingly, these users are on the 4.02.13_G baseband. A I've just read that the ziPhone 46BL unlock uses the 4.02.13_G baseband but upgrades the software to 1.1.3 (thats kinda wierd...). Personally, I don't think this is a great idea, unless Apple can gaurantee that there is backward and forward compatibility with the baseband. No one really knows for sure, though. So in short, Cello is probably suffering the same issue as Navizon and LocateMe on 4.02.13_G, so yes, I'm sorry, Cello may have been in fact crashing the baseband. A baseband crash is just runtime thing though, the baseband should automatically restart itself and work again. Cello itself does not modify any baseband code or nake any permanent register changes, and it also does not sit in the background pinging the baseband. Either way, a power-off power-on should totally clear any issues. If a restart doesn't help, then its most likely another issue. Just some background on the issue, I have a feeling I know what is causing it. I'm pretty sure Cello, Navizon and LocateMe all share the same cellmonitor codebase forked from the iphone-wireless code, and I've noticed the code has a pretty glaring hole. The cell monitor is started, then once up, queried for cell information. However, the monitor instance is never destroyed, even on application terminate. So what is probably happening is the baseband is trying to pass information back to an application which now has disappeared, thus crashing the baseband. Or putting the chip into low power mode with an active monitor crashes it. No one has reversed engineered the cellmonitor stop interface yet and thats probably why its not implemeted by anyone. I might have a crack at reverse engineering it when I get some time in order to put these issues to rest. It is odd how the baseband crash phenomena is only present in 4.02.13_G, though. I used version 2.4. After using Ziphone to jb/act/unlock, if I configured wifi to use wpa-psk it was fine. However after turning wifi off and then back on, it can't connect anymore. If I don't use any encryption method, it was all fine.

Thanks for making this poll sicky. I hope it can run a few days to get everyone voting.
I think the preliminary results of the poll are surprising: its not just modified baseband'ers that have problems. At least one xSim and one legit customer have problems as well. Does it look like it first of all an Apple-problem? Lets wait and do better interpretation of the results in a few days. Then i count on making more speciffic polls, about SW unlocks and BL,BB,FW versions. Perhaps we will get to a clearer picture this way. |
