Hallo,
The difference between the US, DE an FR iPhone (1.1.2 OTB) is in the Baseband. If the next software update will come, it needs to seperate between the different iPhones for the correct BaseBand update, so that the SIM-Lock will be for the right carrier. As figured out a couple month ago, you are able to use a different contract from AT&T in an SIM-locked US iPhone, and you are able to us a non Iphone contract Sim-Card from T-Mobile in a SIM-locked DE iPhone. During the software update the software will probably verify the Version of the iPhone through the IMEI number or the serial number (or through the old / existing BaseBand). TO ALL PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE 1.1.3 (BETA) FIRMWARE WITH BASEBAND UPDATE: Is there a way to use the software update to change an US iPhone to a DE iPhone. Or is there a way to modify the IMEI, or the serieal number that the software update thinks the iPhone is a DE version and it will change the SIM-Lock in the BaseBand to a T-Mobile Locked iPhone? Please correct me if I am totaly wrong with my thoughts. Regards Stodek |

No source, just thoughts.
In some way the iPhones (US, DE, FR) needs to be different! And the difference must be kept after an update! So during the update there needs to be a selection. Another posibility would be that iTunes will load either a US, DE or FR software update file. |

I am sure that the only difference between ALL iPhones are 6 digets in the BaseBand.
There is a verification of the first 6 digets of the serial number of the SIM card inside the BaseBand. The Carrier can be identified through these numbers. Thats the whole SIM-lock (see iPhuc threads from July '06) Until now all updates were only fo the US iPhone! But the next BaseBand update needs to take care about the different carrier identification (the 6 digets). This has nothing to do with the Firmware (1.1.2 or 1.1.3). This is universal for all iPhones (US, DE, FR). |

I would wager that the US and Euro iPhone update packages will be the same IPSW, as is the case now with 1.1.2. |

That is right. In the seczone is the IMEI and serial number stored. This is not touched by an update. But the 6 diget carrier number is stored directly in the BaseBand. And the BaseBand is touched during an update!
Ther must be a way to modify the seczone, because some users have a bad IMEI issue. Isn't this an error in the seczone? |

I got the point:
The country specific iPhones are bound to a local operator. At some point in the manufacture process of the iPhone there must be a decision to witch operator the iPhone belongs. You canīt use a US iPhone with a german T-Mobile SIM, so there must be a difference in the software between the local versions. So maybe, the softwareupdate makes a desicion an maybe there is a way to "change" the desicion and make a US AT&T iPhone a German T-Mobile iPhone ... |

Thanks gothier!
You got the point. It is not about the FW! This is definetly the same for all countries! It is just the fact, that you can not use / activate an US phone with a german T-Mobile SIM, even if this is an iPhone contract! It all comes down to the first 6 digets of the SIM card serial number! |
