PLEASE READ THIS!

Versions of any open source projects are thoroughly reviewed by team leaders before it is compiled and released to the public as an OFFICIAL VERSION.

Firefox is open source. Do you see Firefox version 9991487354.12.4234? The answer is simply NO Why? This is simply because developers who wants to release modified versions of Firefox have to use a name other than Firefox.

While there can be other unofficial builds of AnySim, which will probably released as a different name, if you don't trust the source, just download from the official site, where the integrity of the binaries have been checked by both the community and the team leaders.

I am very sick of people re-iterating the same immature point that newbies would screw up the program with open source. In open source, file changes are tracked. If anyone screws up the files, it CAN be reverted.

If you are afraid that Apple will be able to make fixes quicker than ever, think about this: Would they ever post an immediate firmware upgrade whenever they fix exploits? Would you have an option not to upgrade? Apple programmers are professionals, even without our sources, they can fix bugs in the matter of hours.

So please, why not try submitting other arguments. I am seriously bored.

And one more thing, please stop posting the three words "Keep it closed"/"Keep it open". You cast your votes by voting on the poll, not by posting.

I have no idea on coding but when a new unlocking method comes out i don't trust it unless its by you guys and all these strange versions by people will come out with terrible issues and don't work probably
I say keep it CLOSED!
I am certainly in utter shock that people want to keep anySIM closed. The exploit used by anySIM to re-write the baseband is well documented and KNOWN. anySIM is not using some secret unkown exploit to unlock the phone, hence there is no need to keep it closed. Now, if anySIM uses something that needs to be kept secret (guess what, anySIM can be RCEd too) then it is okay to keep it closed

Till this day the dev team didn't release anySIM 1.1.2 even though it is still closed. AnySIM 1.1.2u came from another team (a few hours after 1.1.2 was released) that had to patch the binary resulting in unexplained behaviors sometimes.

The dev team can certainly push things out way way faster if the source is opened. Imagine anySIM 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 being released only a few hours after new firmwares are out. Even though someone might know how to get anySIM to work with a newer firmware, the only route to take currently is patching the binary.

I don't see any reasons to keep it closed.
Just make sure that it is the real deal when you download and run AnySim.

i would want to know the opinion of the dev team, also if they want to keep it closed why so, I would say that they should take this decision, if they feel anySim is better off as closed, then I would respect that.

OPen it up. Opensource has led to many new developments as it has a wider programming field to draw from. Current and future firmwares will be patched/hacked more quickly and a once and for all true unlock may be discovered this way. The current 'teams' are both doing excellent wok as both have given me the options to unlock my iPhone. Opensourced will make the job less intensive for the teams.

Thumbs down Keep it closed.

Keep it closed.

There are not to many people who can help to develop new versions and who can clearly understand the process of coding.
I can imagine that most of them won't be interested to help too much when the open source will be released.

And don't forget that you will open source for apple as well and show them all week points of the code too. I think they got more interest to fix-em than freelance hackers to find a new ways of unlocking.

So it sounds for me like " Lets open castle gates for enemy army so we can kill them inside with the help of peasants"

Ah, finally, a voice of reason.

The way an unlock has to occur is through the serial interface, so no matter what, it's trivial to reverse the unlock without the source since a debug iPhone mounted on a test assembly will reveal everything that goes from the cpu to the modem. Not release the source adds maybe an hour to how long it'll take an iPhone engineer to reverse it?

On the other hand, letting them watch benefits all you users because there's less of a chance of the 1.1.1 upgrade bricking fiasco happening all over again since they have a more accurate picture of what the unlock app programmers were thinking.

I had an iphone in august and only did a jailbreak just last month because I finally finished auditing a jailbreak utility to see whether or not there was anything that looked unsafe or malicious. I'll consider an unlock someday if I can audit that as well, but it's not likely cuz I just use it as a ipod touch now anyways.

I have it on good word that the 1.1.3 unlock GUI (once it's needed) will be released by another team in full open-source fashion.

As other users have pointed out, the underlying baseband patch has been released to the public already. It is literally simply patching a "1" to a "0" byte at a specific location (0xa0236f28, 0xa02372d4, 0xa02359d4) in FW (3.14, 4.01, 4.02). It is not a secret. . Apple knows precisely what the baseband patch is doing. The GUI is just (a very nicely implemented, kudus to Erica et al) graphical interface to the very public iPhone MNC unlock patch.

Exactly this is the point. From the begining it was clear we wanted to do quality releases and no testing beta to the public. The binary patch itself is btw. violating the current license of the tool anyways as it is not public domain, its just freeware to which still certain things (like copyright) apply. We kept the tool closed so far in the fair hope that our wish of respect of our work would be accepted, but some arrogant punks had to simply continue their rip off way.

There will be no anySIM 1.1.2 by us before we can not at least asure a 99% working state in a sane enviorment.

Opensourcing anySIM will also give us also a enforceable position to prevent such stuff in the future and to ensure security for the user towards further releases. The code will be opensourced under GPL.

Quote:
* a) The work must carry prominent notices stating that you modified it, and giving a relevant date.
* b) The work must carry prominent notices stating that it is released under this License and any conditions added under section 7. This requirement modifies the requirement in section 4 to “keep intact all notices”.
* c) You must license the entire work, as a whole, under this License to anyone who comes into possession of a copy. This License will therefore apply, along with any applicable section 7 additional terms, to the whole of the work, and all its parts, regardless of how they are packaged. This License gives no permission to license the work in any other way, but it does not invalidate such permission if you have separately received it.
* d) If the work has interactive user interfaces, each must display Appropriate Legal Notices; however, if the Program has interactive interfaces that do not display Appropriate Legal Notices, your work need not make them do so.
As now even the last one of the original authors (daeken, iZsh, pytey, me ...) of the free unlock given their "Go!" for the opensource release the offical release willt ake palce friday at:

http://code.google.com/p/devteam-anysim/

Thanks to anyone who participated in the pool. Here we go!
