Thanks for the list, this is realy gonna help me out on my first hackintosh. I had a question on the "cheap one" list. The motherboard listed is a gigabyte GA-G31M-S2, but I'm having trouble finding that one for sale..... but, there's a lot of listings for the GA-G31M-S2L. Whould it be okay to use that one?

Hey icchan, another question from a newbie- I heard that depending on the hardware depends on the method of installation (like Retail, Kalaway, etc.) what do these setups support? I'm contemplating whether or not to build and install retail OSX or not.

Those combos support Retail and Distros, even the Core i7 ones support distros but with them is different, they just will support one core without patching, so you will need to install retail with DSDT Patch to get 8 cores working

Hope it help

Default Hopeful Hackint0sh Newbie

Howdy Forum!

I am hoping that I can find a suitable machine lying around my house that would work out, and wondering if anyone has experience with that combination.

I hope to install it on a Sony Vaio VGN-A600B laptop with the following specs:

Intel 915
Pentium M 1.86GHz
1.5GB RAM
Video: ATI Mobility Radeon X600 128MB

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/spe...B_CTO_mksp.pdf

I also have 3 Acer TravelMates:
4060
4000
252ELC

Any help you can give a newbie is very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks for the start! I checked the HCL, and didn't see the video card or the exact chipset, but at least some were close. Fingers crossed!

This thread is awesome, thanks. I just completed a budget system for my brother and put XP and a kalyway distro on there for him. His roommate (who is loaded) loves it, and wants one of his own. He already has a mac pro, and an older PC, but is heavily into PC gaming, and is so loaded that if he wants something, he'll just throw though dough down for it. Plus he's paying me to slap this together for him, so I'm not complaining. His limit is $2,000, so if you think it's best, icchansan, I'm going to use the "new one" combo from your first post as a template. Here are the parts I'm going to send him to start ordering:

CPU - Intel Core i7 920
Mobo - ASUS P6T
RAM - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB
GPU - EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB
HDs - 2 WD Caviar Black 500GB
Optical - LG Black 6X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM
PSU - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V
CPU cooler - Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 120mm

I will be leaving the case up to him, as he's the one who has to look at it all day, but I'm thinking that we'll both agree on the newer Antec Nine Hundred. This should leave him at around $1500 total it's looking like.

My question is, which distro or retail install method would work best for dualbooting with Vista or Win7 on this system?

Anything else I need to know? Anything I should change in this setup? Thanks so much for all of your help.
