icchansan, this is the greatest thread I've ever seen on Hackintoshes.

I'm a PC user for over 20 years. Used Macs and other Apple products years ago, but never really anything modern. A couple friends have some that I've played with but that's about it. On to my questions...

I'm thinking of one of two builds. I have an Asus P5K motherboard (it says <GREEN> on the box, it's P35/ICH9. Checked the HCL and it's not on there (but then again like I said, it's just P5K Green. I can't find it anywhere on google either). Anyway, I have the P5K and a Q6600 lying around the house. I'd have to buy the rest of the components. My question is, is this mobo good for doing firewire streaming from a DVR as well as gaming? I may play WoW on it, but mostly it's going to be a test Media Center/HTPC possibly with blu-ray but definitely with firewire. Here's the proposed build, roughly:

Asus P5K P35/ICH9 mobo
1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1
2GB DDR2 800 RAM
9600GT nVidia video (probably EVGA because I love them)

A second build I was considering was maybe something with a miniATX mobo so I can make a more portable Hackintosh (Hack Mini?) The requirements would be the same as far as what I'm using it for.

Oh, also, I guess I would prefer Vanilla install with retail DVD because everyone tells me this is better. I'm so new at this, I'm colored green, so I come to you for advice. Also the insanelymac forums don't work for me. It won't let me post Haha Thanks a bunch!!!

-Mike

Hey there, heres a guide for your combo

The OSx86 Scene Forums • View topic - [Guide] ASUS P5K Vanilla(Plain): Installing Leopard [080111]

now for a mini atx you can try with gigabyte p31, but not sure if you can get one of those XD

Good luck with your system and yes try with retail, check munkys guide for more info ;D

Hi again, thanks for the links! It looks like a LOT of patching to get this board to work Maybe I'll just buy one of the combos you suggested

The P31 (GA-P31-ES3G) is full size ATX. I'm a little confused by that. Plus it's available everywhere. Is that the right model?

I will definitely check Munky's guide again. Thanks!

EDIT: How about this build? Would it be able to act as an HTPC as well as game (Like World of Warcraft, or Source games like HL2)?

(Apparently I can't post links, so here's the build

SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223L - OEM $26.99
WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s $99.99
EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB $129.99
OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) $54.99
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3LR LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $99.99

Subtotal: $411.95
Shipping: $10.05

Grand Total: $422

I want to use as little patching as possible.

Hello,

I'm going to make a hackintosh, what do you think about following combo?

MB: Asus P5Q PRO iP45 OR Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3 iP45 <- can't choose between them, which is a better?

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 + Ice Hammer IH-4405 <- not sure with cooler...

GC: PCI-E Palit GeForce 9600GT, 512Mb, 256Bit DDR3 OR ... something rather nice, fully working and with the similar price

RAM: 2x 2gb DDR-II 800mhz Patriot (PSD22G8002)

HDD: SATA-II 320Gb WD3200AAJS (7200rpm) 8Mb

What MB should I prefer? What GC will be the best choice?
Is it a good config at all?

Thanks.

Default SATA vs PATA

Hi, silly question. I have old PATA hard drives and DVD drives that I can use for my build. All of your recommendations are SATA. I assume that this is just because they are faster and PATA would be fine. Is this true? Are there any issues that come up when using PATA devices? Thanks!

thanks to all who contribute to ths board, and to DD for his guide and patches, I got my 'monstermac' up and running on 10.5.7 in no time at all.

Gigabyte UD5
i7 920 clocking at 3.4 Ghz
coolermaster V8 keeping it cool
6 Gb OCZ DDR running at 1440 at the moment
PNY nvidia 9800GT with 512 Mb
2 each Seagate 7200 rpm SATA HDD's (one for XP)
1 750W power supply
in a CoolerMaster HAF932 full tower

NO problems or hiccups at this time....ready to take on CS4! note the display in the photo is for testing only! I'll be feeding multiple displays

Well I have been lurking for little while now but I'm finally ready to pull the trigger. I'm going with more of a HTPC so my specs don't need to be to high. I just need enough to run 1080p natively with 7.1 audio capabilities with 6 analog outs and possibly dual booting OSX and Vista, but I will mostly be using OSX as I have an iMac also. Based on my research this setup should be compatible but let me know what you think.

GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H onboard GeForce 9400 HDMI

Pentium E5200 (possibly trying to oc up to 3.0ghz if possible)

WD Caviar 640GB 7200 SATA (will add another later)

2 x 2GB G.SKILL DDR2 SDRAM 800mhz (at the moment but would like suggestions on stepping up the mhz and compatibility) *Edit - Just read there is a quirk that only allows 2GB. I guess I will need to get the most out of 2GB then...any suggestions.

400w PSU (should be enough?)

My thoughts are this setup should meet it's the needs for it purpose and is fairly upgradable through more ram and CPU. even another video card for that matter.

Thanks in advance!

Should run without problem, grab a guide and prepare yourself, now for 7.1 audio I think you will need to get a pci audio card, cuz I dont think your gonna be full supported, you can always try with voodooHDA
