I am new to build a system. I am trying to put together various components, but I am trying to stay below 400$. I already have a HD (IDE), and a video card ATI HD4350. The reason I want to stay below 400$, is because I don't really see the point of building a system when you can buy the imac mini instead.
Could you please explain what is the advantage of building your own system versus buying the imac mini ? (other than the challenge).
And could someone guide me on components I should buy to complete what I already have (if they are compatible) ?

thank you very much for your help.

Great combo, not sure about your mobo, you better check HCL before trying with this mobo, or just pick one from the 1st post, good luck

You can try with cheap combo in the 1st post, and still use your ATI HD4350, advantage with that system... hmm not much, there advantage with Quad core and Core i7 I guess, cuz they are cheap than MAC Pro, I think one can be, that you can always upgrade the system without buying from the expensive apples hardware, hope it help ;D

What do you think of this motherboard ? It seems to have the same features as the cheap combo you recommended. Am I missing something ?
Newegg.com - BIOSTAR G31D-M7 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

what about the hard drive ? Will and IDE work fine ?

Thanks for your help.

IDE should work fine, but SATA is the best choice, with IDE try to put it alone, as master. yeh that mobo is ok for OSX, there lots of guides with that so, google a bit and try ;D

Lacci, theres lots of tutorial for your mobo, google it man, you shouldnt have problem, you can use any distro or try retail to get the best installation.

serhito, should work, you will need a patched kernel like voodoo to get it working tho, check the voodoo project for more info.

Hey there last monkey, yeh man it should work, but check the HCL for similar ACERs, I think you will need to MOD or try with Retail, good luck you guys, report back your progress ;D
