I put a simple schematic up on my web page at http://thecave.homeunix.org/ipod.jsp. I have just measured the current flow, and it appears to be no more than 500mA, so it doesn't look like any current limiting resistors are needed. I have been charging for about 30 minutes so far, and while the regulator is getting hot, I think that it is still within a valid range.
All this being said, this is still probably a very risky setup, and even though it is working for me, you still run the risk of burning something up - walk carefully here! Cheers [Update]: Looking at the logs when I plug the iPod in, it looks like the OS detects this, and automatically limits the current to 500mA. This may not be quite as risky as I previously thought, although I still recommend you fully understand what is happening before you do it. 8-) The log entry is here: Sep 20 12:12:02 Aurora kernel[0]: AppleSynopsysOTG2::_handleBrickTimerEvent No Host Detected and D+ == D-, raising current to 500mA for charging Last edited by thebigone; 09-20-2008 at 08:20 PM. |

@wzad
Does this cable work on firmware 2.1? I have heard a number of reports (including in the comments at DealExtreme's site) that the cable no longer works after 2.1 update... I have seen this problem myself in another third party cable (Scosche showTIME), although I am working with the company to try to resolve it... Update: The good folks at Scosche have helped me through this, and now my showTIME cable is working. Not sure of exactly what caused the fix; included in the actions I had done were to jailbreak, reboot a few times, and sync a few times. Cheers Last edited by thebigone; 09-23-2008 at 02:04 AM. |

As long as the patch isn't too big and there are not too many people downloading it, I can put it on my website. (I will try it for a while, but if the bandwidth gets to be too much, I may have to stop - I just have a home Internet connection).
PM me if you would like this. Cheers |

FYI my chinese pirate 'should work with iPod touch' cable came in today. It works great for about a minute or so, then stops playback.
Syslog contains these messages: Oct 3 17:11:31 Aurora kernel[0]: AppleH1TVOut: mixer underflow: 00000003 Oct 3 17:11:31 Aurora com.apple.iapd[24]: warning: assertion failed iSchmave: Any update on the patch? I'm still open to hosting it, and would love to beta test as well if that is still needed. Cheers |
