Default I-Tunes problem

Can anyone please help. I am running i-tunes version 8.1.1.10, when I connect my unlocked 2g i-phone to the computer I get the following message on i-tunes.
"This iphone cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the itunes installer to remove itunes then reinstall i-tunes"
Can't understand why there is a problem as I installed straight from the Apple site.
I am not even able to do a backup on this site.
Any suggestions please.
Regards John.

If you look in Add & Remove Programs do you see a file called, Apple mobile devices Support?

If you do uninstall it & also uninstall itunes then reinstall itunes & try again connecting your phone again.
