Default SSH over wifi not working

Dear all,

I have a strange problem using SSH over wifi. I jailbroke my iphone and have openssh installed among things. When i open the terminal on iphone, I am able to locally ssh into my iphone, using the wifi IP. When i try to ssh to my iphone from my computer, I just get a time-out. I've also tried ssh over the 3g ip address, and this sometimes worked, though not always. ssh over usb by using itunnel gives no problems. What could the problem be that using ssh over wifi doesn't work? Thanx!

Can you specify the circumstances? Is the initiating computer on the same wireless network as the iPhone? Is it a Mac or a WinPC? What ssh client are you using? What is the error mesage you're getting? The more info you give us, the easier it is to pinpoint the problem.
cheers! mousyak

Thanx for your reply!
both computers are on the same network. I tried on windows and linux. for windows putty was used and WinSCP, on linux i used the command line ssh. I get a time-out error on windows, and linux says "no route to host". I am able to ssh to my linux computer from the iphone. Pinging from iphone to computer is also possible. Pinging from computer to iphone doesnt work either. The iphone is able to ping itself though. To me it seems like there is some sort of firewall on the iphone blocking incoming connections or something... Or my wifi is f**** up. haven't had the chance to test on another netowrk though.

I know this may sound stupid: Do you have BossPrefs installed. As far as I can recall it can disable the SSH daemon automatically after a reboot of the iPhone.

Yep, I have bossprefs installed, and have switched SSH on and off a million times.. I had SBSettings installed before, but the SSH button there made my iphone crash. Could it be SBSetting corrupted my SSH even though I reinstalled it?

Maybe this is the reason.

Well, I once had a weird SSH behaviour (way in the 1.1.3 - 1.1.4 times) and it ended up resolving by full Restore, jailbreak and the works. That might be your last resort.
Cheers!

Given the history this would be my preferred way out.

Send a message via MSN to iSubaru
Lightbulb

First thing - SSH Deamon
Second - Open it and "click" Enable
Third - Don't turn off SSH Deamon
Fourth - Use SSH in Your computer like this...
If I remember correctly
Code:
ssh root@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where xxx is IP of Your iPhone for example 192.168.1.3
Fifth - enjoy
Sixth - Rep Points :hack:

From my experience with all ssh switchers, BossPrefs, SBSettings, manually, etc once
you turn it off it WON'T go on again, unless you restart the phone. I tried to fix
this so many times without any luck.

The weird thing is that when you first install it, restart is not needed. But once the
keys are generated, the switching won't work.

Restart the iPhone, play not with any switcher, and try.

Anyway, try to ping.. can you ping your iPhone? If not, something is wrong with your
network. If yes, try to telnet the iPhone. YES telnet the iphone. Telnet is
pretty raw to care not of any configuration problems and such. Telnet can connect to
ANY open port. Like this:

Quote:
osiris:~ unl0cker$ telnet 192.168.1.101 22
Trying 192.168.1.101...
Connected to 192.168.1.101.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.7
^C
Connection closed by foreign host.
osiris:~ unl0cker$
See, I got a winner:

Quote:
Connected to 192.168.1.101.
Escape character is '^]'.
If connects using telnet, then is a SSH daemon configuration problem. If still no connection
is made, then must be your network.

Also at this point you may want to check if the daemon is running. Install MobileTerminal in
the iPhone and type this:

netstat -an |grep LISTEN

You should be able to see the *.22 there. If is not then the deamon is not running.

Quote:
unl0cker:~ root# netstat -an |grep LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.62078 *.* LISTEN
tcp4 0 0 *.22 *.* LISTEN

Many routers have a port forwarding option. Maybe that ip is set in some weird way.

I can't think of any other network issue. If you have a laptop,
try another network.

Hope this helps,
Cheers
