hi!
just got an iPhone 3 days ago, mistakenly upgraded to 1.1.3, downgraded to 1.1.1 and 4.01.13_G and unlocked with anySIM. I live in Europe, carrier provides no EDGE and got no WLAN in my village. So had to do that in a town ~20 miles away. I 've got an XP laptop, with a wireless 802.11g built-in and a cable LAN connection. So I'd like to share my LAN's ADSL connection with the iPhone using my wireless adaptor as a hotspot. Reading a bit about it convinced me it's possible. There's two approaches I found. Easier it seems is to set up a DHCP ad-hoc on your wi-fi adaptor and bridge the two connections on your laptop. Done that, failed miserably. None of the connections work (even after a reboot). Second is to create an ad-hoc (DHCP or static eg 192.168.0.1) on your wireless adaptor and use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your LAN adaptor. Using this method I got closer. In the DHCP version I get an IP, Subnet, Router and DNS automatically on my iPhone, can ping the iPhone from cmd but cannot ping the PC from vt100 and Safari times out - so no Internet although I can see the ad-hoc and connect to it succesfully. Static version, connects but I'm not sure what to use as router (I guess the DNS servers are the same as my LAN connection). Anyways, I try both my wi-fi 192.168.0.1 and my LAN IP but none works - same results as above. I make sure that I have the right settings (ICS, win manage connection, ad-hoc only, pc to pc etc) but nothing seems to work. Do you guys have any idea how I can get around this? any help much appreciated |

Thanks Derter and Razor, it's great to have some backing on this one
I was pretty much trying along those lines with OpenDNS and ICS. Razor the extra step (12) of running the IC wizard got me a bit closer... I now get "No route to host - Host is down" when I ping from the vt100...still no internet though Derter I tried with MagicDHCP as well...boy this program is complicated! Anyway, I got it running and got an IP etc on iPhone but still same results as b4. I guess it's not the iPhone's fault or the wired connection but rather something related to the wireless adaptor. Once again many thanks guys...back to the fight now

hmm....seems problem has to do with the router between LAN and Wi-Fi after all...
can ping the iphone even when I'm not connected to the LAN so Wi-Fi and iphone communicate allright. I tried to restore windock in case this was the problem but no luck...I'll let you know if I manage to get it working. update: I also managed to connect with Winscp...good connection speeds but after a while I get this: Host has not answered for more than 15 seconds. Warning: aborting this operation will close connection. ai, ai, ai .... Last edited by wormhole; 01-31-2008 at 03:26 PM. |

if the connection crash you have a firewall running on the router(or xp) that stop connection. you have to open the port on the router for winscp to work. I managed internet to work with ics and a bridge + OpenDns. I also made magicdhcp to work + opendns try with a static bridge and with a dhcp bridge and always Opendns. Once you get connection, you can try your default dns. anyway,if you get it to work the connection result unstable,at least in my case. I know that you don't wont spend money, but the best solution is to buy an access point,or a dsl wi-fi modem/router. |

my bad about the winscp connection...
it turns out it only hangs when I try to copy files from the iphone that it needs for the wi-fi connection. Otherwise I managed to download the whole iphone disk on my PC and upload ~60Mb to the iphone with no problems. I have no firewall running at all...the problem I thing has to do with the way my wi-fi adaptor communicates with the LAN adaptor. The Wi-Fi to iPhone connection works fine. I also figured that's quite a common problem. I'll give it another shot and try with a wireless router this weekend. If I don't get it to work and I see some light with the router then I'll buy one myself. For the moment I'll try the bridge solution that you suggested. By the way, on the iPhone do I set the router IP address to the one of my wireless adaptor (192.168.1.10)? Once again grateful 4ur help mate! Cheers |
