Default Extracting and replacing SMS data.

Hi,

I just bought a iPhone 3GS. I also own a iPhone 1st Gen.

I want to restore my 3GS with content that was previously on my 1st Gen, but I am having difficulty with performing a backup with my 1st Gen on iTunes. The backup process is very very very slow and it looked as though it's stuck there. I do not have any previous working backup on my iTunes due to this reason.

Now, I would like to know whether is there any manual method that I can extract the SMS database from my 1stGen and subsequently upload it to my new 3GS via either iTunes or manually.

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me on this.

TIA.

Strange you have a problem with backup on the 2G iPhone, what OS is it running?

If both the old and new iPhone are both running OS 3.x then you can simply use SSH to copy out the SMS database from the old 2G iPhone and move it to the new iPhone. As long as you get the files in the same place and make sure the ownership and permissions are correct you should be fine.

It is not possible to merge two SMS databases on OS 3.x at the moment, this was possible for 2.x but the format has changed and the tool had not been updated.

Hi Olethros,

thanks for the reply.

I am running on WinXP SP3.

I do not know what's wrong with the 1st Gen. It's currently in 2.2.1.

Ever since I upgraded from 1.1.3 to 2.2.1, I haven't been able to do a decent backup.

The backing process doesn't works on all version of iTunes. So I was thinking along the line of restoring the 1st Gen back to 2.2.1. But before this, I would have to copy out the sms.db. After the 1st Gen is restored to 2.2.1, I'll replaced the sms.db and backup my 1st Gen with iTunes again. Afterwhich, I'll restore my 3GS with the new backup.

I think this should works, but now, I encountered another problem. iTunes 8.0.2 and 8.1 does not seem to allow me to restore my 1st Gen to 2.2.1. The screen keeps staying at "Preparing iPhone for restore" dialog. My 1st Gen is currently running on 2.2.1.

Can you or anyone advice what should I do from here?

TIA.

Update:

I finally managed to restore my 1st Gen back to 2.2.1.

Now the dilemma, I don't which is a better way to progress from here, as I want to be as cautious as possible.

1) After doing a backup of my 1st Gen 2.2.1 on iTunes ver 8.1, I will update my iTunes to latest iTunes ver 9.

I'll then reinstall my 3GS and once it's done, i'll restore with the previous profile that was backup from my 1st Gen 2.2.1.

The problem here is that I am afraid there might be a compatibility issue between 3.1.2 and 2.2.1 sms database, as 3.1.2 sms db has a slightly different tables.

2) I will progress to update my 2.2.1 to version 3 progressively and finally to 3.1. After which, I reinstall my 3GS and restore it with backup last done with the 1st Gen.

What do you guys reckon?

TIA!
