Your terminology is confusing. The phone cannot be IMEI locked, it can either be carrier locked or IMEI blacklisted.

You report the baseband is 05.11.07. That means that this phone has been upgraded to OS 3.1. Because of this you are now permanently unable to use ultrasn0w to unlock the phone. This is true even though the phone has been downgraded to OS 3.0. It is not possible to downgrade the baseband. Your only option is to get Optus to officially unlock the phone.

Carrier locked - you should contact Optus in Australia, they may officially unlock it for a fee depending on how much of your contract you have left in Australia.

IMEI blacklisted - if it genuinely was your phone and you defaulted on your plan (or reported it lost) you may have some luck with Optus, but they might be difficult because you did not discuss exiting your plan before you left Australia.

You can find out the difference by trying to use the phone with an active Australian Optus SIM card (it does not have to be the one you used in Australia). If you get reception, it is carrier locked.

i had it on contract in aus and now as i have moved back to the uk and not paid the rest of my bill they blocked it.

i was asking this question because a friend did this in the uk and he now lives in spain and the phone which is blocked in the uk work perfectly in spain

my questioning was basicly is there a work around

As i explained, because you have updated to official 3.1 iPhone firmware (which permanently updates your modem firmware 05.11.07) you have lost any chance of a workaround.

Discussing solutions for IMEI blocked phones is not encouraged on this forum. The phones in question are either stolen, insurance fraud or the result of defaulting on contracts. They are on a blacklist for a reason.

Your friend will come unstuck eventually. The IMEI blacklists are synchronized across the entire EU, it is not an automatic process so after a few months he might find he has no service any more.

The original poster did not say if the phone was a 3G or 3GS otherwise I would have suggested fuzzyband.

Yes there is a small chance he can downgrade if it a 3G running bootloader 5.8. These were the 3G iPhones sold in the first few weeks after the 3G iphone was released.

Just ring Optus and explain to them the situation, ask them how much it is to pay off your contract and get an official unlock. Depending on how long your contract has left it might be the best option.

Otherwise you are stuck with a iPod touch with a camera.
