Default .deb installation - superuser privilege

Hello!

I tried couple of time to install a .deb file. When I try to use "dpkg -i" in terminal, it says me I should have superuser privilege. What is this and how can I have this privilege to install my file?

Thanks!

Default Becoming a Superuser

Hi, welcome to the Hackint0sh forum. Your first post, my 1000th (I wonder if that means it's time to retire? Or have I now become a Superuser?)

The iPhone operating system, based on Unix, has various 'users' defined, each with different privileges in the system. Programs can only be installed by the user root. This is the system administrator or superuser (the boss).

When you start a program on the phone you are usually mobile, that is the ordinary phone user. For example, if you start the MobileTerminal on the phone, you're logged in as mobile. To log in as root, type login root after which the password of the user root will be asked. If you haven't changed it it is alpine

Alternatively, you can quickly become root by typing su and providing the same password when asked.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
* on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
* on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

If you can ssh;
Put your .deb file into /private/var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall
then reboot your device. If the last 2 folders are not there then create them

That still requires you to be a superuser (root). And if you're doing that anyway, you might as well issue the commands in Terminal.

If you follow this procedure using iPhoneBrowser instead of SSH, it will work; it's one of the alternative ways of installing applications.
