Friends .....those of you in India planning for iPhone... THINK TWICE BEFORE MAKING A DECISION... The short comings of iPhone are endless...
No video calling, [we have all N series phone in India which is adored here, they have video calling, but the network? we are decades from it! why do we need it?]
no AD2P on the Bluetooth, [it has Wifi. U know, u can SSH into a iPhone!, its like a mini linux box, ssh into it and run all ur unix commands, zsh is the shell, it has a BSD filesystem, there are amazing apps, which lets u share data seamlessly, and yes u dont have to be tied to iTunes, u can completely get rid of it]
CAN'T share ANY (mp3, images,videos....) files via bluetooth, [same as above, soon we will be able to install any bluetooth profile]
can't use as a wireless modem, (you pay ridiculous data charges to activate internet on your phone, but cannot connect it to your PC and browse when you are at home) [there are many ways, easier than anything other phone and faster all, its called tittering]
no copy and paste,(cannot copy a part of a.... say.... email & send it....have to type it out yourself) [u can forward the whole mail dude or part of mail!]
no 3.2 or 5 megapixel camera,(the 2MP camera it carries is worst camera i've ever seen..... photos look like they have come out of a VGA camera) [get a nikon or a canon, the compactness of cellphones wont permit great lenses, so whats the use of 5 megapixel? just magnified noise! and ya, its usually cmos, not the hi tech imaging solutions like in real cameras]
no video recording with camera, [U can]
no front camera, [for what? nokia has made it a trend? a small cmos noisy camera for what?]
no flash. [Additional drain on battery, iPhone is not a camera]
no JAVA support [it does, it also supports python, ruby, jiggy, perl, php, tcl - you can also run a apache web server on iPhone ;-)]
No physical keyboard (BELIEVE me! this alone is a dealbreaker...touch keyboard as good as it looks...once you use it then only you come to know about the importance of having a hard keypad) [Believe me, its a great input device, very very smart]
No 3G network yet in India..so why pay for expensive 3G phone if you cant use its 3G services ... so, for India, iPhone 2.0 is no better than its first version [blame the GOI and TRAI for the same]
No removable battery. (You cannot change battery. Have to send it to apple outlet.. Come on now!!!!...This is not an iPod. Its a bloody phone. You cannot live without phone for 2-3 days) [U dont have to worry about battery, once u have killed ur battery naturally, it would be more than 1.5 years of ur iPhones lifetime, and I am sure u would be eyeing iPhone 4.0 ;-)]
No haptic feedback and [it does have a vibrator dude(not that u dirty minds), and it has a accelerometer and proximity sensor]
cannot send MMS, [no more MMS scandal's ! ;-), btw, u can send pics and videos and any other file on the filesystem, by email]
can't use as external storage device (16 GB of utter waste..next time you go to your friend's house & find some interesting songs, movies, etc...sorry you cannot connect your '16 GB' phone and share it!!!! Apple apparently has a solution.. " BUY MUSIC & MOVIES FROM iTUNES STORE "..... Give me a break will you APPLE!!!) [oh, u can... just a small hack]
no FM radio, [high end phones usually dont have it, technology, interfering signals]
can't use your mp3 files as ringtones,(This is heights man!!!) [U can :-) ]
cannot insert any other SIM card…. [Who told u that? U can swap sim w/out turning off the phone, a true hot swap ]
completely tied to iTunes... Connect to your friend's iTunes & you risk erasing everything on your phone. [Nope, its not married to iTunes anymore, I got them divorced]
list goes on & on & on….
Yes, u can easily write ur own custom apps, using the power of multi touch, accelerometer... You need to check out the amazing games on iPhone. Also u can completely have a NES emulator and play ur fav contra and mario and even doom and quake.
We Indians are used to these features. Most of our phones already have these features. & we cannot do with out them.... i mean can you imagine paying so much for a phone with which you cannot transfer files via bluetooth. what age is this ...STONE AGE??? [how many times u have actually used the reduntant features, like front camera etc etc]
Some features may be activated by jailbreak.. But why the hell should you risk losing your warranty after paying so much. [U dont, u can restore it even after pawing.. and send it back to apple store for repairs]
And want to add third party softwares??.. YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM FROM iTUNES STORE ONLY!!! . (Shell out more money). Apple is a bloody control freak. Dont surrender your freedom to it. [There is a huge open source community, U shall be overwhelmed]
Its good for american market (who have no idea what mobile freedom/choice is) which is in stone age compared to asian/european markets. When they want to buy a phone, they have to go to network operators and buy only those phones that are available on that network. & stick to that company till their contract expires. You want to change carriers? Not before paying damages, & buying another phone on the other network again. [U can treat iPhone as anyone and use in any network any day any time]
On the contrary, we in India have so much freedom. We go to handset shops & buy which ever phone we like. Then go to carriers.. checkout the plans & buy SIM.. Dont like the plan or rival carrier came up with a better plan???? EASY .. just remove & replace the SIM. [Man, u need to be in control, changing no every now and then, u may miss that interview call from google, they tried reaching u but couldnt get thru]
Apple are trying to IMPOSE THEIR MODEL ON US riding on the hype iPhone has created in the US (yes it was a flop in Europe ..thats why Apple never talks about its sales in Europe).[its a Hit worldwide]
Dont fall for the subsidized price of iPhone... CHECKOUT THE DATA PLAN ATTACHED TO ITS SIM ..they will recover the cost through ridiculous data plans. Bill might come to around Rs 2500/month.(ATLEAST AMERICANS PAY THAT MUCH) [349 per month, unlimited gprs on airtel, same on hutch, 150 unlimited on BSNL, amazing, isnt it... ]
Let me clear one thing though.. iphone is the best looking phone (its touch interface is nothing like you have ever seen ), & best browsing experience out there no doubt .... (& others are fast catching up..check out the android demo at Google IO 2008).... BUT AFTER A FEW DAYS IT ALL COMES DOWN TO FUNCTIONALITY... [Lets the product come to market, then we can match up]
Those of who buy it... You will be most happy for atmost a week... & then, MARK MY WORDS...YOU WILL START REGRETTING IT!!! [Trust me, it will boost ur inner self, all thru your ownership, its will be the cause of envy]
My advice...WAIT FOR HTC DREAM!! (powered by android). Still not convinced by then...by all means go for iPhone... [Keep waiting and be left out ;P]
So friends lets spread this info to all our friends and help them in making a wise decision..... & those of you who have bought unlocked versions already please share your experiences with others [I shared mine, iPhone Rocks!]
