Maybe apple have learnt from the US launch that the customers are prepared to buy the iPhone but didn't like being tied down to a single provider.

02, Orange and T-Mobile would be a good selection of providers, can understand why Three (uk) isn't mentioned but why isn't Vodafone on the list.

in the article it says 02, orange and T-mobile respectively meaning each of the countrys is only getting 1 provider.
