Default iPhone Sync Windows without iTunes? (was: Sync Application for Windows)

Hi Guys,

I just bought myself an iPhone on Saturday, and as an normally using Windows User and Consultant I have to say, that this is a very cool device.

But there are still some things that I am not happy with...
1. SIM Lock :-) I think every European has this problem at the moment.. but we stay in touch and hope for a hack soon.

2. I personally hate iTunes and wanna use another application to sync the iPhone with. Is there already a third party application, that can sync the iPhone with Outlook or another email client?

3. I used for the ipod an application called yamipod to put mp3 files on to it. Is there alread an application available, that can handle this? I also recognized, that putting mp3s through drang and drop doesnīt work with the iPhone and itunes...

4. Do you know something newer that the articles in the net about an activesync client for the iPhone to directly sync with an exchange server, maybe directly via EDGE oder Wi-Fi ?

I thinks these are the normale Windows User wishes :-)

.... what also came into my mind is... are there applications that can do my wishes on mac os x? Because i also have an OSX86 than i could use to check this..
And are there any information about how itunes handles the sync? So maybe i could write an program on my own.

I know that there is a guy who coded an application for mac to sync windows mobile devices.. it is called the missing sync. so there should also be an application who sync the iPhone without using itunes, donīt yo think so?

Kind Regards,

Stefan

The current iTunes 7.3.1 version for Windows works pretty reliable, it doesn't eat up too many resources anymore like it did in the past and even with Vista, it works pretty well. I don't see any (logical) reason not to use iTunes for the iPhone, especially since this is the ONLY way to recover the iPhone from a total crash and/or to update the iPhone firmware.

Well of course is itunes not that bad as i sad...

but i personally donīt like it. I would prefer a little application as activesync which just runs minimized in the taskbar for the sync process.

Second thing is, that i woud like to know if it is possible to drag and drop music n to the iphone.... this does not work with the iphone, right?

Any other applications?

And what about Activesync for the iphone.... any newer information?

Drag and drop doesn't work (yet), you need to create a playlist and upload the whole playlist to the iPhone.
The rumoured Activesync for iPhone was actually referring to an Activesync for Exchange for the iPhone.
You may not have noticed it but the iPhone doesn't run on Windows Mobile.
To be serious: the main advantage (for me at least) of the iPhone is the possibility to play iTunes Shop DRM protected
music and video files. The iPhone lacks UMTS/HSDPA, the iPhone lacks Blackberry support, the iPhone has only
a rudimentary Exchange Mail support (IMAP), the iPhone has a pretty bad camera without video recording capability,
the iPhone's battery life isn't great either when WiFi is used all the time and the iPhone bluetooth setup doesn't
offer a A2DP profile for wireless stereo headphones. This is why I'm using a Nokia E90 as my primary (business) phone,
I also own a HTC TyTN and a T-Mobile Ameo (HTC Advantage) for testing home-cooked WM6 versions.

Why I still like the iPhone? Simple: the touchscreen function and the OS are absolutely fantastic, very innovative.
In my opinion the iPhone is the first touchscreen gadget/phone which actually can be really USED completely with a touchscreen
without the need for a stylus. The OS look/feel is also great, very fast operation, very nice graphics, very professional looking.
Then, there is the iTunes Shop DRM protected mediafiles playing capability which is also very important for me.

The iPhone is in my opinion the perfect SECOND phone, especially if you're living in a region with a wide UMTS/HSDPA coverage.
I just hope that the rumoured iPhone Pro or the iPhone Gen 2 gets 3G AND the capability to buy iTunes music and videos instantly
over the air. This would be absolutely fantastic.

:-)

thatīs exactly how i think about the handy. The innovative way to use the phone is great, style and everything just looks nice. But some functions, such as sending a picture via bluetooth isnīt implemented.. so hopefully this will be fixed via software update.

So as usually apple is not offering great functions instead of nice looking GUI and a great hype around it.
But just because of these things, i can live with less functions :-) Although i am normally using windows mobile devices....

So what i need is an activesync client on the phone. And hopfully they will release that. In my Opinion they have to do that, to be interesting for business people because of the mostly used exchange servers.

But i have read, that apple licensed the activesync protocol like nokia does. and they also brought and activesync client which works pretty good...

So do you think there is coming something? And maybe there will be drag and drop support for the iphone?

What i do not understand is, that my iphone is already activated, so i can use it for wifi and all that kind of stuff, but when i connect it to itunes, the program tells me that i have to activate the phone....

than i just cancel and after that i can sync my phone normally...
is this normal?

I bought my phone from a guy who tould me that he activated the phone using an AT&T Prepaid card....

Call me an optimist but I'm pretty confident that along the iPhone lifespan, Apple will improve the iPhone and they will offer new features too.
Right now, the iPhone is pretty much "rudimentary" (basic) in all it's functions but judging by the OS used, I think that Apple will add a lot of features and improvements over the next couple of 12 months.

Right now they seem to sit tight to watch the "hack" attempts/achievements, to develop possible countermeasures and...to count the tons of money they earned with the iPhone.

With the success of the well known development team in bringing third party applications to the iPhone (Hello World hack), the future of the iPhone looks very bright to me. I also think that Apple has something in mind regarding 3rd party application programming and/or something of their own stuff, like for example an optional business pack for those who need MS Office compatibility, document encryption and a fully working Exchange Mail client. I doubt however that Apple offers this stuff for free.

Regarding the activation of your iPhone: difficult to say what is wrong. Maybe somebody else on this forum can help. I have activated my iPhone using the AT&T GoPhone option (everything works, incl. YouTube but not the phone part) through iTunes and I have no problems with it. From time to time however, usually when I turn the iPhone completely off and then on again, I get the message on the iPhone(!) that the iPhone needs to activate the AT&T subscription with the option to dismiss it. Even if I leave it this way for an hour and don't dismiss the message, nothing actually happens. I think the iPhone needs to actually activate the AT&T SIM card for the first time on an AT&T network but since I don't have AT&T in Germany, the message pops up again and again and again. iPhone works fine though, when I dismiss this activation message, no problems occur at all.

I would like to get a program that allows me to sync music form 2 different computers without deleting the music from the 1st computer when syncing from the 2nd. I think there are some 3rd party apps that does that on iPod but do they work with the iPhone?
