For those needing a bit of spoonfeedin'

http://pinouts.ru/Devices/ipod_pinout.shtml

For those (like me) who solder well enough to destroy just about anything they touch, prebuilt TTL-RS232 converters are not terribly expensive.

http://www.embedinc.com/products/ser/index.htm

This one's a bit smaller and half the price but in this case smaller=harder to work on/solder in my case.

http://www.hvwtech.com/products_view.asp?ProductID=289

And for the iPod end of things, a breakout board attached to the connector. No soldering on that itty bitty connector.

http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/pro...oducts_id=8295

There's also a cable with all this built in but I have NO idea if it will work. I ordered one as well to check. The price is DEFINITELY right.

There is this little known thing called Google. Actually any search engine would have this information.

I guess you meant me. Thanks! I ordered a PodGizmo for the iPhone side. I've got a Mac, so would I need to get a RS-232 Driver Module, wire the non-connector end to the PodGizmo, then get some kind of RS-232 to USB converter/cable? I'm curious why I can't just wire a USB cable to the PodGizmo.

Because you want to talk to the iPhone over it's serial interface, like connecting to a unix system over a serial interface. Unless I'm wrong, the connector here connects to a serial port in the iPhone vs other pins in the connector having audio outputs, USB connections, whatever else is in it..?

What you could do, is get a RS232/USB converter and wire the PodGizmo to the USB converter.

Now that we have a shell, and the ability to mess with the filesystem:

Can we write files?

If so: Someone, compile a Hello World application and compile it for ARM, upload it, execute.

I'm guessing without a sort of su implementation we have to figure out a way to elevate privleges before we can have too much fun?

What shared libraries are available?

I don't have an iPhone to play with just yet.. I'm ansy though..

Nope, it means you have complete administrative access to all the files inside the iphone.
This is the first step into tinkering with the applications inside the iphone to make it do whatever you want, including writing a code to make the phone truly unlocked.

I would suggest the iogear USB to Serial converter cable.
They also have the drivers for MAC, I tried 3 different ones before finding this one and it works great on my Intel Mac.
