most likely just the little image at the top of the iphone.

which obviously opens the discussion to multiple services prescripted into the OS?

But aren't they there for roaming purpose only? Remember this is supposed to be a world device and they would want to identify the carrier if someone was overseas with the ATT phone and on another network. This is not uncommon in GSM phones at all.

why would the image be that, that's likely to be text, plus it changes to black in other parts of the UI where the bar is white. It's most likely something else. Still interesting, it's supposed to be picked up by vodafone in europe. Or they may be also leftovers that were just standing by to see wic carrier would pick up the brick.

Normally I would say that this discovery wouldn't be anything to get excited about as almost any phone will carry many carriers images from the world over, also some carriers use an image rather than text when you're on their network. These are always contained on the phone for when the it's roaming and is having to piggyback on another network.

But if the iPhone only contains those four carriers images then I guess it almost seals the deal for T-Mobile & Vodafone users in Europe (I wouldn't hold-out any hope on Vodafone Australia yet tho)

Let's just get an official annocement next! I'm on Vodaphone UK and I'd get an iPhone imported if I could get it to work and/or activated... but I think I'll wait and see if the EU version has any tweaks first... namely 3G...

My guess is that the .png files are for roaming partners. I have an iPhone (activated with AT&T) and use it in Germany. When I go to Settings -> Carrier I get this list of (roaming) networks to chose from: T-Mobile D, E-Plus, Vodafone.de, o2 - de
