Conclusion - enable edge, don't worry about http applications, they all use local proxy server, you can see it in privoxy screen monitoring all client's (i.e. iphone's) requests. For Mail use 127.0.0.1 and be sure that mail requests will either be tunneled over PC or (if this tunnel is not available for some reason) wont be sent over edge at all. It's a dull to modify Mail settings every time you need to work indoors/outdoors but there is no other way to force Mail to use tunnel. Consider something like changing hosts file in the iphone the same way as it's done for proxy.pac. Quote:

![]() btw Do you really have to reboot the phone when you switch proxy setting in BossPrefs? It's a bit annoying.. what about respring, restart CommCenter.. I just wanted to point out that theres still traffic going through your provider's gateway. And Im not an expert so i really dont know which app is an "http app" and which not. YouTube uses http for searching, but I guess the videos are coming over separate streaming ports. All this may not be too important as long you dont have to worry about edge connection fees.

http://arashpayan.com/blog/2007/09/1...on-the-iphone/ but here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthre...=526457&page=2 it is mentioned that because of non-standard youtube port it doesn't use proxy. OK, we need only to find out what kind of port youtube uses. If youtube connection is TCP-based and uses one port it's possible to add extra tunnel in S2C configuration the same way as for imap/smtp. If not leave youtube for wifi access only. Thank you very much for your attention. |

Rogoschin - Yesterday I've tried to check youtube functioning at work. We have Checkpoint firewall with internal wireless AP. It is configured to serve wifi clients with http/https requests only. So connecting iphone wirelessly to it I can not work with anything (Mail etc.) except http-based apps.
Before try I disabled edge in my iphone with BossPrefs to be sure that nothing can pass over it. After wifi connection I tried to open Safari to be sure it works. Then I opened youtube and noticed that everything is OK there. I could start any video, all worked as it should. And very fast. So my sum - it is very likely that youtube uses http/https only. At least in my case. Last edited by alk; 08-12-2008 at 11:18 AM. |

there is nothing to show in video there, just read and follow, use screenshots for reference.
If you need shorter and more direct manual send the request thru PM, I'll prepare it for you. |
